iPhone vs Droid

I have Verizon, and was waiting for them to get the iphone too, but every time I heard a rumor, it never panned out. Verizon recently had the buy one get one free offer for the droid so I got 2, one for me & one for dh. I love this phone! I like having a physical keyboard, so this is probably better for me than the iphone. I get my email on it, can surf the web when I’m stuck waiting somewhere, use google maps and navigation to find places, and I like how it organizes text conversations and phone call history. The voice search is really good too. It’s not as pretty as the iphone, but I’ve gotten over that :)

Oh, and compared to other phones I’ve had, I think the battery on the droid is pretty good. I am surprised at how long it lasts, much better than the battery life on the env touch.

I’m in a similar spot but I currently have a Blackberry. I would like to keep the Verizon network…it’s better…but I really like the Iphone…and would love to put all of my music on it. So I’ll probably switch to ATT but soon as I do, Verizon will probably get the iphone!

So I’m frozen…and I hate it.

Can anyone speak to the transition from a keyboard to the touch? That’s what I’m most worried about in addition to the network. Not that my BB is terrific…it has VERY tiny keys. Also, won’t the ATT plan be cheaper with the recent changes to the pricing plan? I’m not a heavy user.

EXACTLY. I hate that I want an iPhone “just because it’s an iPhone”. I feel like I’ve fallen into Steve Jobs’ slick little marketing trap, which makes me NOT want an iPhone even more. I’m glad I posted this thread. Its making me feel better to see good experiences with the Droid…

Iphone4, simply due to the fact it has one manufacturer will also be a step behind on the technical standpoint. Apple, from a hardware perspective has to compete with HTC, Samsung, Motorola (the three main manufacturers for the Android OS). It’s hard to beat three competing manufacturers all the time.

In the operating system department - Android is pretty much already superior to iOS. Once Android 2.2 comes out on a mass release the speed differential between Android and iOS will be very clear. Android also offers free turn-by-turn navigation. Which is incredibly useful (Apples costs money, I believe).

A disadvantage to the Droid phones is that they do not work in many countries outside of the US, including Europe. This is the main reason I have stayed with my Verizon Blackberry device. The link posted above regarding the Droid X would not open for me. Does anyone know if this device will be compatible outside of the U.S.?

AT&T’s initial iPhone exclusivity period was booked until 2012

It’s possible some of the chatter re Apple revisiting the deal may or may not have merit. No way of knowing.

I have 3 friends who Droids and they detest them. I don’t have all the details but I know you can’t mention the word “Droid” around them without the fear of being hit with one.

Lol, cartera, that was my husband at first. The droid does have a learning curve. H was ready to throw it out the window, but when dd excitedly offered to trade phones, he reconsidered. I had to teach him how to use it a little at a time, feature by feature. Now that he knows how to use it, he likes it.

I can’t link to blogs – but go to the Consumer Reports website, and there is an entry in the electronics blog called “Face-off in the labs: The iPhone 4 vs. the Droid X” dated June 30.

Here’s the conclusion: "Further, even if Verizon announces an iPhone in January, there’s no telling how long after that they’ll actually start selling the device. Our best guess: A lag of about six months, making a Verizon iPhone available in the traditional June timeframe in which every new version of the iPhone has been launched by AT&T.

Bottom line: Wait for a possible Verizon iPhone if you really want to—but ready yourself for up to a year of delayed gratification. And that assumes a Verizon iPhone really does get announced in January 2011."

(I have an iPhone. I love it. I switched from Verizon to AT&T to get one, and don’t regret it. I have had only one instance of problems with phone service in a year, when I was in South Dakota. Had more problems with Verizon service.)

blankmind - maybe I should check back with them to see if they have adjusted to their Droids. There were definite threats of them going out the window.

Love droid - free navigation with turn by turn directions, plenty of aps. No as good for games based on movement of the phone

I love my Incredible. I got tired of waiting for the iPhone. My Incredible does everything an iPhone does. It’s super fast, the Android market has just about anything you’d want (even a vuvezela app), and the screen is beautiful. One thing it does that iPhone doesn’t is utilize flash.

Oh and google maps is incredible. You can use a great speech to text feature to search the map, then pull up the website, reviews and of course real turn by turn navigation. All free.

The one thing I think the iPhone does significantly better is integrate with iTunes, which is where my music lives.

You will drive yourself nuts waiting just get an incredible, or wait for the new Droid X.

So Trojanchick - what do you use to get music on your Incredible? Rhapsody? How about movies, can you watch them on your incredible? How do you get them on? (and what is vuvezela??)

You are right, I am driving myself nuts. The other thing I’ve told myself, is - who cares if I get an incredible and then an iPhone comes out? If I really still wanted one at that point, I’D JUST BUY ONE.

Ahh, I have the vuvuzela on my Blackberry too! I was totally obnoxious during the US games  The Blackberry apps store is slowly getting more on it, not at all like my family’s Droids ( the other 3 in the family have them) but getting more. Can’t wait really until I no longer need the superior email and tethering of the Blackberry and can get one of the others.

JAM- if you watch any world cup soccer you know the sound of a vuvuzela. It’s the sound of bees in the background.

We have a family Verizon plan. DD (an adult but still on our family plan because the individual plans are so expensive – and phone companies said any group of people can form a family plan by the way) really wants the I Phone. The reason she won’t consider a Droid is because she has a Mac and she wants the I-Phone so that her calendar programs will interface which a non-iphone won’t do with her computer. Is the December rumor about Verizon and the Iphone true? By the way, it’s not just the phone, it’s having to go to ATT which I am very reluctant to do.

I’m returning my Droid Eris. I think I have a lemon but don’t want another one. But, I like the Droid platform and will consider another Droid.

I sort of get what this means, but how does it impact my life?

AAHHHH…the vuvuzela…wasn’t expecting an app related to THAT!

OK…now I’m leaning again to the iphone. I DON"T want another piece of equipment that I want to throw out the window. My printer fits in that category. (it’s weird though cause I’ve always been a pc vs a mac…but that iphone looks too cool to pass up).

One thing I think I would use quite a bit is the Pandora streaming. My niece does this to play music when folks are over or just as background music when she’s cooking or cleaning. That and the ability to put my itunes on there…I’m going for it. Will wait to see if they fix that antenna issue though.

Pandora works great on my droid. It’s probably the app I use the most.

I have an iPhone 4, and previously had an iPhone 3G. My roommate has a Droid.

To me, there’s no question. I use iTunes, so obviously that makes syncing all my music easier. The iPhone 4 has features that I actually like – an internet connection that is literally as fast as our home computers (which are very fast), video chatting, an amazing app store, user-friendly interface, HD video recording and camera (I don’t have a digital camera), and so forth.

Honestly, I don’t really have any complaints and after seeing my roommate’s phone, I only feel happier with mine. It is exactly what I want, and given that the iPhone 4 is the fastest selling Apple product thus far, you’d be in good company.
