IPhones w/Verizon

D may be replacing her 3 year old Verizon phone with a Verizon Iphone. She is going to remain on our plan, but will be paying us for her own data plan.

I am not familiar so much with Iphones and Verizon - will this effect our plan in any other way - besides the data plan? Can we still share minutes? No other hidden costs???

Just want to be sure and have info before we walk into the Verizon store.

I’m a little jealous! :)

We’re on Verizon. My husband has an iPhone and the rest of us have droids - no issues with sharing minutes and no other hidden costs.

Don’t be jealous - I thought I wanted an iPhone until husband got his. I discovered I much prefer my Samsung Fascinate.

Thanks for info MomLive. What don’t you like about the Iphone? H has a Droid and neither D or I care for it - too bulky.

Funny, you should mention size…to me, the iPhone is too small, making it hard for me to read. A friend recently went into AT&T with a 100% intention of buying an iPhone (her husband has one) and ended up coming out with a Samsung android phone similar to my Fascinate. Her comment was the iPhone seemed to small and hard to handle compared to the Samsung one.

My husband always seems to be having issues with his iPhone…like it pocket dials constantly. I’m get random calls from every family member who has an iPhone (my dad in DC, my sister in Tx, my hubby). When I use his phone I always walk away thinking my phone is much more intuitive and easy to use.

Also, my Fascinate has a Swype keyboard that makes texting and typing so much easier than having to click on every key. That is one of my top reasons for preferring the Fascinate.

I don’t have anything against Apple - I have an iPad I adore but I can’t seem to find anything about the iPhone that is better than my Samsung.

I never understood people who “butt dial” others. My iPhone is set to lock after 1 minute; you can set it for longer if you want. My husband and kids have Blackberries and their phones also lock. I wouldn’t blame the phone, blame the owner! My cousin has had several different phones and I have received calls at all hours of the day from her due to butt dialing. No matter how many times I tell her about it, I still get the calls as she never remembers to lock her phone or change the lock time to a shorter time.

^ I know. I constantly nag my husband about locking his iPhone. I automatically do it every time I finish a call or any other activity on my phone.

My husband finished a call in front of me last night and then set the phone on the counter (without locking it) - never touched the thing and it called someone within 10 seconds. No kidding. I’m not sure what it is about the iPhone but I only get ‘butt-dialed’ from the people I know with iPhones.

DS added an iPhone to our verizon plan. He was already on our plan, just changed phone. $10 for the extra line and $30 for the data plan. Comes to about $50/mo with taxes and insurance for his portion.

My droid constantly randomly dials numbers. I lock it after each call but that doesn’t seem to keep it from doing it. I was thinking of changing to an iPhone to avoid this, but doesn’t sound that that will solve the problem.

Stupid question: what’s a ‘swype’ keyboard?

We have 2 Verizon iPhone 4’s in our family. Other than having to pay for the data plan (we both got in before they ended the unlimited plan), it’s like having any other phone on your family plan. Between the 2 of us we’ve never had a problem with pocket dials. Although we occasionally get pocket dials from S2 from his LG phone, our iPhones don’t seem to do them.

With a swype keyboard, you simply run your finger across the keyboard, hitting on the letters you want (they call it ‘drawing’) and intuitively it knows what you want or at the very least brings up a list of word options. It’s not necessary to individually hit every key. It actually works pretty well. Of all the devices I’ve owned with keyboards (PDA, Blackberry), this one is the easiest to use.

[Swype | Type Fast, Swype Faster](http://www.swype.com/)

I’m very paranoid about the pocket dialing thing so I am fanatical about locking my screen after I use it.

There are four people on our family plan, two with iphones. It’s the same as before we had i-phones except for the charges for data. I was recently butt-called by DD on her i-phone and by DS on his blackberry (he’s not on our plan). My phone locks after one minute and I’m pretty sure hers does too.

My IPhone has a button on the top (which locks the keyboard?), which I push before I slip the phone back into my pants pocket. No auto-dialing. Ever.

Yesterday while I was on my iphone, my phone called someone else, I have no idea how.

I would always forget to lock my blackberry & it would pocket dial.
My H’s flip phone doesn’t pocket dial but he has 500 photos of the inside of his pocket.
My iPhone also doesn’t pocket dial, but when it is in my purse the voice activation comes on.
But re: verizon- if you are upgrading a reg phone to a smart phone, you may need to change your family plan. They didn’t offer our family plan anymore so we had to do an overhaul of the plan.

H already has a smartphone as part of our family plan so I think we’re ok there.

So he is giving up his smartphone?

We added one to an existing line, so we had to change the plan, but I got to grandfather in my unlimited data- for my phone only.
My H wanted an iPhone, but he doesn’t text at all- he doesn’t really use email, he only wants it so he doesn’t have to have an iPod ( he reads books on it) & his phone.
BUt that doesn’t seem worth the extra expense so far.

The swype keyboard sounds interesting but is it any more accurate than auto-correct?

We have 5 phones on our plan. Mine, S, D2 are all basic phones. H has a Droid. D1 will be updated her basic for a likely Iphone. Sorry if I was confusing! I just didn’t know if Verizon treated the Iphone any differently than the other types of phones.

It seems they are always finding ways to add additional charges so I didn’t want to assume anything! D2 was going to stop by the Verizon store in her town last night and ask questions, but I haven’t talked to her yet. We will be helding there tomorrow for other plans, and a stop at the Verizon store will probably happen. Just wanted to be somewhat prepared!

That I don’t know. I just find it easier because it’s not necessary to push on each key - you just trace the word more or less. I have my auto correct turned off because I find it annoying. If swype isn’t sure what word you are tracing, it pops up a list of suggestions. Usually it’s pretty accurate and it will memorize words you use frequently.

I recently got a Verizon Iphone from work. I also have a personal android phone. Initially, I was liking the iphone, but after several weeks, I’d have to say I like my Android more.

What I like about the iphone: I use it like an ipod. The screen colors seem richer and the camera resolution is better.

The droid I have has a physical keyboard, which I much, much prefer over on screen keyboards. I have carpal tunnel and have poor tactile response, meaning trying to type accurately on a little screen is torture. Especially with the iphone, when I am trying to respond to technical emails from work that require a detailed explanation.

I do like the iphone autocorrect over sywpe. My husband uses sywpe and sends me texts telling to to park the cat in the driveway

Also, the droid screen is larger and easier to read. I find the touch screen response better on the droid, maybe a little too good sometimes.

Apple restrict contents on iphone aps, the android market is probably more open, not that I’m looking for sex aps or anything. :)

Learning so much from this thread. Was in Verizon and Sprint yesterday, our two year plan is up. The Verizon salesrep said that they offer “weekly” lessons for their phones. We didn’t find out if Sprint does the same.

Any truth to the rumor that Sprint has ‘dropped’ calls and connectivity issues ?

Thanks for the laugh!
