ipod/iphone apps

I have been without my well used/ loved ipod video for months- I am not going to pay $150 to replace the hard drive since that is practically teh cost of a new one (- tried changing the battery and the infamous slamming down on a hard surface- didn’t work :frowning: )
But- I * need it*, not only so that I can focus at the gym but because I have volunteered to chaperone my daughters high school official graduation all-night party. ( she graduated last year) When she was a junior, I also volunteered and it came in * so handy*
Not only could I bring my own music ( so as not to have to listen to the thumpathumpathumpa all night) but when I was stationed by the exit doors I could watch the West Wing! ;)

I thought it would be fun to get a new app or three to try out- or maybe a podcast?
Any suggestions?

As a bird watcher…my choice would be i-bird (strangely enough one of the most popular apps)

My son just submitted an app to Apple; no word on when or whether it will be accepted and posted, but you can look for I Sez or maybe Isez, I can’t remember. This is a game similar to the electronic game “Simon” when you had to push lighted buttons in the same sequence as demonstrated by the computer. S1’s app utilizes a “tilt - don’t touch” control system. It’s pretty cool (and will hopefully make him a few bucks since he’s devoting his summer to writing apps).

ibird sounds good- I know most of the native plants in our area and have gotten backyard habitat certification- but I don’t know any but the most common birds and I would like to learn more- thanks

archiemom that sounds fun-but hope he gets some fresh air!

I like to have fun but simple games. The Sudoku app is one of my favorites. The free version comes with 40 games in varying levels.
There’s a free dictionary app called Dictionaire that I find really useful. I keep my iPod with me while I’m reading books, so I can look them up quickly instead of lugging around a paper dictionary.

I generally don’t lust after electronic gizmos, but when I saw the ibird app I wanted an IPHONE!! Its on the list of “stuff I want when the economy turns.” If you get it, please update me on its effectiveness!

Thanks to all who made suggestions for ipod apps.
I cheaped out and bought the smallest storage ( 8gb- how funny it is to say eight * gigabytes is small* ) for $179, refurbished at the apple store.
(I know they are coming out with a upgrade ipod touch at some point, but I couldn’t wait-)
except for the ill fitting headphones and the realization that I can’t store half my music & videos on it, it is great.

I like that I can use the pdb files with ereader that I had with my Palm Pilot. I also like that there are other applications to read pdfs. and Kindle files if I want.

I downloaded a dozen (free) language apps for rudimentary introduction to other languages ( they didn’t have Tamil, but they did have Hindi, Vietnamese & Malay… et.al.) & I think that the touch screen is much more accurate and easier to use than the touch phone that I tried out a month ago but then decided to return.

I wish you could change the battery & I think it is stupid, that they don’t have a slot for a memory card.( don’t they think people would still buy them?)

& why can’t they ship a pair of headphones that fit
Other programs I like

  • Monster Pinball*
Roger Van Oechs Creative Whack Pack
recent update to 3.0 system software that adds Bluetooth and voice memos and shake to shuffle.
I was also happy to find * Myst* just like the original program available
Tarzan comes free with ereader- and I like backlighting, cause I don’t read sitting outside in bright light anyway- those annoying black floaty things are still there.

There are also several places on line to get free books- but I still am working my way through all the books I downloaded for D to read in India- but then didn’t get them synced onto a card to read on the Palm.
:o
and for those who are looking at a kindle, but have an iphone
[Kindle for iPhone: Read Kindle books on your iPhone or iPod touch](http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000301301)

DD has the iphone and the Kindle. Uses mainly the iphone now which is great because I can use the kindle. I don’t like reading on the iphone…I need the bigger page and the ability to up the font size…

Would you share where you can find free books online? I must say I LOVE my iPod touch :)

This is the first place with free books

[Main Page - Gutenberg](http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page)

and here is another

[ManyBooks.net - Free eBooks for your PDA, iPhone, or eBook Reader](http://manybooks.net/)

if you already have files on your computer that you would like to read on your ipod, you can transfer them to the personal section of ereader and then download them to your ipod.

[ebooks for your iPhone, Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone, Palm Treo and Centro or Symbian Mobile Phones - Over 60,000 Titles and counting!](http://www.ereader.com/)

also if you have an ipod video like I had, you can use ipda, to transfer files and make it more like a Palm.

Thanks so much!! I just love all the free apps. One I find very handy is 9-Toolbox. Handy utilities such as currency converter, tip calc, unit conversion, etc.

I was just noticing that while many of the CC’ers request product reviews, we rarely come back and say what we bought or how we like it.
( BTW- where the heck is DadII? He has screened many suggestions)

So while I bought the smallest ( 8gb) itouch and I love it- it makes me sad that I don’t have the storage of my 5th gen video ipod, with all the youtube clips of Pearl Jam and whole seasons of the West Wing.
:frowning:
( and I have to share that I thought my 5th gen- was completely out of warranty since it was so old, so when it didn’t work, I opened up and replaced the battery. That wasn’t the problem, so I tried a trick used by Apple geniuses ( techs), on out of warranty ipods. I slammed it down on the floor a few times in the hope that it would unstick the hard drive.
Didn’t work.
So I bought the itouch, but when I registered it, I saw that the 5th gen still had a warranty!
:o
oops.
Anyway, some of my favorite apps ( besides the ones already mentioned) are
msecure, which is a password protected place for various account information
wifi trak, which tells me what wireless access is available and now that I have this neato toy, it makes it really simple to use internet where ever I can use my phone

  • Since I have verizon and not an iphone*
Ambiance- a white noise player with hundreds of free sounds to download
Triazzle a fun puzzle game, that I used to play with the kids when it was made out of pressed cardboard!

More public domain books to get for free at feedbooks.com

Thanks for the link to manybooks.net - I didn’t know about that site and it looks great!
