I have decided to buy an ipod touch. It will mostly be used for music/video entertainment while traveling. There are also a few apps that look like fun. The 32 GB is not much more expensive than the 8 GB, and seems worth the extra. I am not sure about the 64 GB compared to the 32 GB–worth the extra money? Also, I am looking at the 3rd generation models on Amazon . . . is there any reason I would need/want the very latest model?

The 8 GB 3rd generation is really a 2nd Generation unit. If you buy the 3rd generation, get the 32 or 64 GB because those are actually 3rd generation units.

8 GB is enough to get you started. A new version comes out every year, and eventually you’ll want to upgrade. I’d do a larger version later if you decide you really love it.

I have had the 32GB 3rd generation model for about a year now and like it very much. I don’t think I’ll ever fill up the 32GB of flash memory. The 4th generation models have a camera (actually 2 cameras) and are a little smaller. I don’t feel any need to upgrade.

I had a 1st generation 8GB which was pretty much full. We just bought S a new Mac laptop, which came with a 3rd gen 8GB touch as part of a promotional package. For $100 I upgraded to the 3rd gen 32 GB. The 4th gen came out a couple days after we ordered, but I had read all the blogs about what it would include and didn’t feel I needed to spend that much more for a camera. I gave my 1st gen to D, who is using it as a PDA, and can get her email around campus. (Her music is on her original iPod.) Since I have SO much more room, I’ve gotten a couple of apps – currently addicted to “Words With Friends.”

If you have a lot of music (well over a thousand songs), get the 32. I have the 32g iPad and put videos on it and 16 would not have been enough much less 8.

I think the 32GB or 64GB would be good for you since you’re planning on using it for videos/movies. Movies are usually about a GB or more a piece, so an 8GB probably wouldn’t be a great idea. I just got my 32GB 4th gen iPod touch today, and I really like it so far. The Retina display is really nice and clear which would be good for movies.

I love my 4th gen ipod touch-definitely go for 32 GB over 8, since it’s not much more money. I think 64 GB is probably overkill for most people unless you store lots of video. A reason to go for the 4G is the cameras-the still camera isn’t great, but the video is. Also, there is a built-in speaker (which I understand is not the case for the 3G). There are a number of iphone apps you can use with the 4G but not the 3G, and the possibility of doing face-time videochatting with anyone who has an iphone or 4G ipad. Also–as BryDeeC noted, the retina display is awesome. I’d go with the 4G…

My 3rd gen has a speaker.

Sorry, CBBBlinker. I meant built in microphone-4 gen has that, and I believe 3 gen needs speakers in the headphone. Good for using with facetime, voice messages, etc. You can also use skype with 4 gen–but only via voice–no video! Not sure why or if this will be coming.

^^^ Gotcha. Not a feature I needed, so not worth the extra money at this point.

You can use Skype with 3rd gen if you use the headphone with built in mike that Apple provides with the unit. I’ve used it that way. Might be somewhat more convenient to have a mike built in to the unit like the 4th gen iPod Touch.

Thanks for the information. I think I have decided to go ahead and get the newest 32 GB version–for the videos and the skype (D was away much of the summer and did set our home computer up for skype–and did skype us a few times while she was away, and so it is possible that I will use that feature). I will head to the apple store this weekend to get the full sales pitch! In the meantime, I am wondering if I can preview itouch apps using just my itunes account on my desktop computer?

^No, you have to have an iTouch/Phone to actually use the apps. You could try searching up ones you’re interested in on Youtube. I would recommend checking out the top apps on iTunes and seeing if anything catches your eye. Also, iTunes has screenshots of the apps which can help you get an idea if you would like it. Have fun with your new iPod. :)

Really dumb question that will point to my limited skill in the iPod arena. Just received a free 8G iPod Touch through a bank promotion. How do I know what generation it is? And what is the difference between generations?

^^^^ Does your iPod have the following features? If so, you have a new, 4th generation version. If not, it’s 3rd generation:

* FaceTime
- Retina display
- HD video recording
- Game Center

Complete idiot here. I don’t know what those features are to know if I have then or not.

^Does it have a camera? If it does, it’s a 4th gen. If not, it’s probably a 3rd gen.
