ipod touch question - will Apple store replace screen and battery (and for how much)?

I have an old (2nd generation) ipod touch. It still works, but the screen is in pretty bad shape and the battery needs to be replaced. Aer these things that could be replaced if I took it in to an Apple store? If so, about how expensive?

If you are handy and don’t feel like sending it back to apple, you can order parts and tools to do it yourself here:

ifixit is great- unfortunately my 80gb classic iPod had more problems than the battery.

^ ^

What problems does your 80 GB classic have?

My 30 GB 5th Gen Ipod has a faltering battery and minijack. When the battery falls below 1 hour capacity from max charge, I plan to order the parts to repair it so I can continue to use it. :)

I think it was the hard drive & I wasn’t motivated to replace it. It was expensive to replace the hard drive & it still could have been the logic board, so I just got a 2G touch instead.

I changed out D’s iPod battery using very clear instructions (very important and included a video), the necessary tool to open the case and a battery that actually had more capacity than the Apple original. Ordered through ipodjuice.com. As noted, the clear instructions were critical. Even then it was pretty darn stressful, as my D warned me that if I messed up her iPod, I would never see any grandchildren! It is not really an easy task but this company did provide me clear, well illustrated instructions on what to do and what not to do. It seems like I recall that the reason D did not send it into Apple was that they would not guarantee that she would get her ACTUAL iPod back and she did not want to be without it even for a short time. I believe this site also has mail in service. It’s been almost 3 years and that iPod went to college with her and is still going strong.
