iPod Touch

One feature the iTouch does not have that would be nice is a camera.

A couple questions - glad I found this thread!

I’m considering “asking” for an Itouch for Christmas to replace my Ipod Shuffle and my Palm. Saw one this weekend (actually 2 12-year olds had Itouchs!) and was impressed by the quality of the graphics and ease of reading for my eyes-that-need-reading-glasses so much!

So, my questions:

 • is it logical to think this can replace my Palm? Can the calendar on the Itouch be synced on my computer at home or work to keep track of my appointments?

Do those of you with reading-glasses-eyes find the visuals to be not too bad? (I know, still keep my reading glasses close…)

Has anyone bought one of the newer ones that supposively has a camera (as noted in a post above - I haven’t researched this option yet) - if so, what do you think of the picture taking ability?

Buying an Iphone isn’t going to happen right now being we have 4 phones on Verizon plan and don’t need to spend ANY more money monthly on phones…I’m ok with that. But thought the Itouch might actually be worthwhile.

If you have a phone with Verizon, Motorola (with Verizon) is coming out with a new phone, the “Droid” to compete with the iPhone. They’ve recently launched a media blitz, with ads appearing pretty much every commercial.

If you haven’t seen the ad, youtube: “Droid Commercial”. It’s supposed to be the next big thing and supposedly better than the iPhone.

That being said, the price tag is still unannounced.

The iPhone’s advantage, as Apple knows, is now in the App Store. As the ads say, there are over 75,000 apps now and many of them are amazing, including vast numbers of games that play beautifully. Look at the number of apps available for other phones.

As for devices themselves, we all owe a debt to Apple for reinventing the cell phone and making it so much better to use. That said, the many competitors are using Apple’s work to push ahead and that’s they way competition works. Apple is adding features to the iPhone - the latest rumor is they’ll enable the radio - but they seem to believe the real differentiation is applications.

Id sell it.

I agree with Lergnom.
I have a Blackberry tour that is ok- sound quality isn’t great, the tracker ball often gets stuck, no wifi, apps are pathetic, expensive and slow ( and only a handful)- I do like being able to get my mail right away ( but I can do the same thing with ipod touch if I am near wifi). I switched from my LG in order to have an easier keypad for text

Some of the ipod apps * are* really amazing and intuitive.
My husband who does not like computers, does not particularly care for cell phones or personal technology in general, is eager to switch to an iphone even though it means going with Att.

The Apple apps are amazing. I don’t know how Verizon could possibly come close to replicating those. But I will keep my eyes open. I did a quick search for a commercial - the one I saw did not show any pic of what the Droid might look like - in fact, I saw one conflicting article written earlier today that indicated that perhaps the Droid might not be released. Geez, hard to figure all this tech business out!

http://images.pcworld.com/news/graphics/173878-moto_droid_bgr_original.jpg</a></p>

There is a newly (as in today) released picture of the Droid. It’s the only picture that’s been released. It will most certainly be released.

I agree with the apps though. It will be incredibly, INCREDIBLY tough for Verizon to top Apple in that regard.

^^^ So that must slide up for the keyboard, huh.

I have one and I mainly use it for working out. I have a wireless bluetooth headset and the iPod Touch broadcasts music to it. I can change the song or volume level through small buttons on the headset. It can also answer and originate phone calls if connected to my cell phone.

I also use it for browsing the web when I don’t want to fire up a computer. It’s also nice for checking the weather in the morning.

I got an iTouch to replace my Palm. There were some setup challenges regarding the calendar and contact synching. I couldn’t get it to synch with Outlook, but it will synch with other calendar programs. I got it to synch with Outlook by synching outlook with a Google calendar (newly created for this purpose), then synching the Itouch with the Google calendar.

Contacts were more challenging. I didn’t want to retype all my contacts into the iTouch (tiny touch keyboard + lots of contacts = insanity). And I don’t want to type them into my work Outlook (I am a consultant, so change clients frequently). I don’t have Outlook on my home computers, and didn’t want to pay for it. I finally settled on keying my contacts into Yahoo (needed a contact repository that will take a snail mail address and notes like birthdays, etc.), then synching that with the iPhone.

I am in the reading glasses set, and I find it quite readable. MUCH better than my Nano when I am driving the car and want to change to a different song.

So there was a fair amount of messing around for setup, but I now have a “Palm replacement”, and I do not have to pay a phone company for a data plan. :)

The second and third generation iPod Touch machines have BlueTooth capability but I think that limited or no functionality is turned on. What I would like to see is full BlueTooth capability on the iPod Touch so that you could just pair an external BlueTooth keyboard with the iPod Touch and do keyboard entry with a real keyboard. It would be nice to be able to do a mouse in a similar fashion.

I’d be happy if I could just figure out how to make it work. Still happy with my classic.

bumping for myself to read later today!

I love my iPod Touch. We have WiFi so I use it downstairs or outside most of the time. I will sometimes bring it with me when I get an oil change or stay in a hotel with free WiFi. Most of the time I forget to bring it along when I’m out and about and regret that I didn’t throw it in my purse. Between Starbucks and local bookstores, we have lots of free Wifi around here. One of these days I might get an iPad. :)

I have all free apps. I’m cheap! :)

I got one with son’s graduation computer. Since he already had an iTouch … this one was MINE. ALL MINE. I love the wifi … can use it as a little computer at home on our wireless network, at work also.

It’s really funny to stand in the middle of Main Street and watch all the wireless networks pop up …

I don’t think I will need to take my laptop to the trade shows this fall – I will have the itouch for email access and whatever necessary web browsing. And I am taking it on vacation – no laptop!

Using the clock function a lot … world clock, alarm etc. Also picture album, and some music. I am sure I will use it a lot more as I discover more functions.

I have a Sudoku game on mine. I also download free financial shows and listen to them while driving…

Soccer fans - or to annoy those who are not… You can download a free vuvuzela noise maker app. Totally annoying!!! ;)
