iPods

So how do people pay for music here? Is there any place on campus or really close to campus (walking distance) that sells itunes gift cards?

I mean…if you want to buy music legally, I’m supposing you have a debit or credit card you can use to do it? I mean, target and stuff has itunes cards but I’m not sure about anywhere you can walk to.

There’s also ruckus and things of the like. Of course, you can’t LEGALLY get the music to your ipod.

And then there’s those of of us who opt for the, eh, not legal route BUT alot of people are getting caught lately and having to shell out a few thousand bucks.

Ebay is actually a great place to find iTunes gift cards for cheap. Plus, many sellers will actually email you the code so you can get it quickly.

That said, I would actually recommend not using iTunes unless they have an exclusive song or something. I find that Amazon Mp3 Store or even Walmart are a lot better. Not only are all their music files unDRMed (meaning you can play them on any player, any computer, and burn them as many times as you want), they also generally have higher bitrates than iTunes which means you get better quality music.

On the other hand. There are many places where you can find music for free without the risk of being caught. Beemp3.com is a good aggregator/search engine that searches the web for mp3s. Ruckus is a good place if you figure out how to de-DRM the files (which is technically illegal).

Either way, walking to a brick and mortar store and actually buying an iTunes gift cards is somewhat unnecessary not to mention time consuming.

Nope. That’s why I buy gift cards; so I can use cash.

Well, since most banks automatically give you a debit card when you set up a checking account, you’ll definitely have a debit card when you get to college. Unless you don’t plan on using banks and will be carrying your entire semester’s worth of spending money in cash…

I would also definitely recommend getting a credit card for a couple of reasons:

 1. builds credit (very important)
 2. convenient
 3. fraud protection when making purchases, especially online (something many debit cards don’t offer)

Cash is about the last thing I would keep in large quantities in my dorm because:

 1. your dorm isn’t very secure, the doors will be open, strangers will come through, there’s no safe, and things can get stolen
 2. if your cash is lost or stolen, there’s basically no way of getting it back
 3. it doesn’t earn you interest just by sitting there

Just a few things to consider.

I have a card, but I’m not allowed to use it for online purchases. If I did carry a semester’s worth of cash (I don’t, of course), it really wouldn’t be much. I spend significantly less than the majority of people here.
