iPWFX International Playwright Challenge 2012

I competed in the iPWFX International Playwright Challenge ([www.iwrightfoundation.com](http://www.iwrightfoundation.com)) for three consecutive years and never made it past the first round. Several students from my drama class also sent in submissions but never made it past the 1st round. I’m wondering if it is even possible for high school students advance in this competition because from my experience and the experience of many others I’ve known, it is impossible to make it past the first round. I have, however, met college students who have plays that made it to the second round.

I understand this is an international competition with 1,000+ submissions each year, but is it really that much out of our league as high school students?

it is entirely possible.

I have a friend who knows David Liu (his play placed 4th internationally) and he traveled to New Zealand with the other finalists as part of the competition. www.iwrightfoundation.com/#!ipwfx/ctzx[/url”>http://www.iwrightfoundation.com/#!ipwfx/ctzx]www.iwrightfoundation.com/#!ipwfx/ctzx. He’s a high school senior.

BUT! It is extremely difficult because the competition is already self-selective and many of the applicants are referred. Based on my friend, David was also the first high school student to ever make it into finals.

Bahhhhh I thought my plays were really good. I won a lot of local competitions, many of which I placed first. Damnnnn you ipwfx international playwright challenge. I WANT TO GO TO NEW ZEALAND FOR THREE WEEKS FOR FREE!!!

thanks for the fast reply though. Guess I’ll try again in college.

hey, it’s not only you. I have several friends who never made it to the 2nd round either even though they’ve sent in submissions each year.

my sista who’s studying in Europe made it to the 2nd round. But then again, she’s a college senior and has been studying theater for 8 years. gl

if you don’t mind me asking, what did she write about?

she wrote a comedy about a new Chinese immigrant family living with a group of hispanics (REPRESENT!!!) because of a split rental in one house. The kids of each family ended up secretly dating each other, and you can guess how the families reacted. Then they eventually accept each other and both families become really close friends. It’s pretty hilarious.

but the entire 2012 challenge was - “2 acts with religion playing major role”. Did she compete this year?

yea she did. The play went a lot deeper than what I just summarized, and religion played a big part in their initial conflicts and final resolution. If she had only written about what I just described, no way would she be able to make it past 1st round in this competition. All of iwrightfoundation’s stuff is pretty tough. The scholarships, the ipwfx international playwright challenge, becoming a film intern. You have to be really good.

I see… 10char

don’t worry my friend. Focus on giving your plays the ability to affect change, and iwrightfoundation will recognize them.

do you know any other good playwright competitions?
