*Iranians Among Hezbollah Dead, TV Says

JERUSALEM (Aug. 9) - Members of Iran 's Revolutionary Guard have been found among Hezbollah guerrillas slain by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, Israel’s Channel 10 television reported on Wednesday citing diplomatic sources.

It said the Iranians were identified by papers found on their bodies, but gave no further details on how many were discovered or when.

As far as the news regarding the discovery of Iranian Revolutionary Guard in Lebanon it is relatively unsuprising. What is suprising is that they were careless enough to be discovered.

Given Iran’s sponsorship of Hezbollah and general control of the organization, it would make sense that Iran’s elite forces would be supervising Hezbollah operations. The story is fairly limited, but it would not suprise me if the Iranians where providing technical assistance on rockets, especially larger ones, and where caught in the middle of a firefight.

This will definitely not mean war between Israel on Iran, as Iran will deny any official involvement and probably claim the men were simply jihadists fighting for the greater Shia cause. Furthremore, Israel would be stupid to involve what is the strongest power in the Middle East at the moment instead of concentrating on Hezbollah.

well, the strongest native power. Saudia Arabia is right up there too though, holding the keys to mecca and medina

You would think Iran would be smart enough to not allow themselves to be discovered. Russia managed to disguise their fighter pilots in the Korean War as Chinese. It’s not that hard.

Historically, soldiers who need to be deniable by their own government go in “sterile”–nothing traceable back to their native country. The fact that the Iranians weren’t sterile says a lot about their lack of concern about being discovered–or perhaps their surprise at being attacked–they may have felt very safe in southern Lebanon, despite UN Res. 1559. That says a lot, too.
