IRS ID Verification

I received an ID verification request from IRS. I went online to comply but the system says it can’t complete the verification and I have to call. I’ve been calling and calling and calling but cannot get through - their lines are full and I get a message to call back another time. I’ve also tried scheduling an appointment with my local office but those lines are full as well.

I’m concerned because I received the snail mail notice and a verification code 3/2 and it expires in 30 days.

I’m not sure what to do next - any advice?

Have you tried calling right as soon as their hours start in the morning?

Yes. The phone is answered and goes through a long speech and then says we can’t take your call due to high volume. Maybe tomorrow I’ll try before they open and then when the speech is over they will be open…I’ll have to time the speech to try to synchronize.

Of course, because that makes perfect sense

What’s the ostensible reason you need to do this? Did the letter say?

Are you certain it really is from IRS? Lots of scams these days. (Of course with the phone line always being busy likely it is legit.)

I had never heard of this until this thread. I found that this letter is legitimate:

I’m certain the letter is legitimate. I received the first letter in Feb but could not verify online then because the system required a cell phone bill that was in your name (pretty stupid IMHO). They then sent me a letter with a verification code in lieu of the cell phone bill.

Umm, I share a cell phone plan with my sister, her kids and my daughter. The bill is my sister’s name, I pay the bill and Venmo everyone.

Why would a cell phone bill be used? So strange

After we realized someone had my husband’s SS number last year, we requested a PIN from the IRS that we would use when filing returns. On August 31. Well, guess what? We still haven’t received one! Every couple of months, we get a letter from the agency stating they need more time to process our request. ?!? Annoying.
