I know this sounds cocky, but I’m planning on taking 10 out of the 15 AP courses my school offers. If I do this and make straight A’s while keeping awesome extra curriculars, would Ivies be unrealistic?

A lot of people take ALL AP classes their schools offers, so nothing special.

10 APs are not all that unusual for those applying to the Ivies (if one’s school offers them). Getting straight A’s in them wouldn’t mean much if you got all 3’s on the tests. Your SAT/ACT and SAT II scores also need to be stellar – these are considered more heavily than the number of APs you took.

You should take as many APs as you need to gain your school’s “most rigorous curriculum” ranking. You may need to take as many APs as your classmates to avoid having your weighted GPA drop. Beyond a certain point (most rigorous curriculum, class rank of #1) I don’t see how additional APs can possibly make a difference in the admissions decision.

OK. What about for a school like UNC Chapel Hill? Would 10 be stellar for them? I just want to see where I’m at. I know 10 APs wouldn’t be great by Ivy standards, I just wanted to see if it would be possible to get in with 10 APs.

Of course you can get into UNC Chapel Hill with 10 APs. The real question is: can you get into UNC Chapel Hill with 10 APs, regardless of the rest of your track record? That answer is no, the whole package needs to be acceptable, there’s no magic single key that makes every other shortcoming disappear.

While having a lot of AP classes is good, there is still 14 other factors they look at. Also, taking a lot of AP classes is common for kids who are looking to get into UNC as well.

Your SAT, GPA, ECs and essay are more important (in my opinion).
