Is 1510 a good first score?

I bought a Barrons SAT prep book and I took one of the tests in the back. I did not time myself though I didn’t concentrate much because I was watching TV. I finished it and I was marking the one’s I missed and I thought I did awful. I added up my critical reading score (490), my math reasoning score (440), and my writing skills score (580), and it added up to 1510. I did not review anything beforehand, I just took it. Is that a good score for my first time taking it? Could I still improve it to reach my goal of 2100? Help!

Well, good is a relative term, but realize that your scores put you below national averages. Take a serious, timed practice test without simulatneously watching TV and then it’ll be easier for us and you to evaluate your potential.

Barrons books tend to be a lot harder than the actual exam. With this in mind, your score can actually vary quite a lot. You should take an official collegeboard test from the blue book. I recommend that you use direct hits for vocabulary, and erica Meltzer’s grammar guidebook for wrting. Math is all about repetition and understanding concepts. I would suggest practicing as many math problems as you can and the math section should be repetitive after practicing so much. 1510 is about average, so its okay for a first timer. You can definitely reach your goal of 2100 with adequate studying!

Very helpful! Thanks!
