Is 18 Credit A Disadvantage?

Hi,
My question is: Will colleges reject me based on my 18 credit 3-year graduation program (versus 24 credit) regardless of my qualifications?

(I’m currently a sophomore and I will graduate as a junior in 2019. Throughout the year, I was very sick and I could not perform to my highest adacemic abilities throughout this year, so my current unweighted is approximately a 3.0 (bad, I know), weighted 3.5. And I took the SAT’s and my score is a 1070 (610 in reading 460 on math, also bad I know. I will also re take my SAT in August when I am more ready. Next year I plan on taking AP’s and all honors, since it is my final year of high school. No extracurriculars, I was too sick for those.)

Why are you graduating early? From what you have written, it sounds like you could use more time to improve GPA, improve SATs and get involved in extracurriculars. With your current profile, you are looking at lower level schools, probably directional publics. If you fulfill your high school’s graduation requirements, and meet the college’s admission requirements, then I wouldn’t think that graduating in three years vs four would affect your admission. But I can’t imagine why you would think this is a good idea.

Just wanted to add that your question is very cryptic. I don’t know what 18 and 24 credits mean. I assume you mean 18 full year courses, as in 6 per year, but I’ve never heard them referred to that way before.

I would stay in HS the extra year to 1) boost your GPA 2) get involved in some ECs and 3) to have more time to prepare for standardized tests. I think you would be doing yourself a huge disservice by graduating early.

To be blunt, yes, colleges will reject you based on you graduating high school in 3 years. Your SAT math score is not a college ready score, even for a 10th grader. You will be at a significant disadvantage if next year is your final year of high school.

I agree with the other comments. Graduating early looks like a very bad idea in this case. Take your time to learn the subject matter that they teach in high school.

If you have an unweighted 3.0 currently, then taking all APs and honors next year is also a bad idea. I think that part of the issue with your grades may be that you are pushing yourself too hard. You should be taking classes that you can handle with quite a few A’s.

College or university is going to be more difficult than high school. If you can’t get at least some A’s now, then you are going to have trouble when you get to college.

Are your health problems truly under control? Deal with them before you try to graduate early and/or to take only honors and AP classes.

There are plenty of colleges that will be happy to admit you with your current GPA and test scores. Whether those are places that you would want to study at is a whole different issue.

Why do you need/want to graduate early?

I agree…stay in HS and take more classes…you can also take Dual Enrollment College classes at your local Community College. Talk to your Guidance counselor abotu that. Best of both worlds…free college classes.
