Is 2200 good enough for SAT?

I posted this in the SAT forum and feel like my question applies to college admissions as well, so I don’t know if this is against the rules or not, but I am going to post it here anways. ;p

So i got a 2200 on my second SAT, which I think is good enough but my main concern is that my reading is very low compared to the others. I scored 800 in writing, 770 in math, and only 630 in reading. Should I retake the SAT and focus on moving my reading up or is this overall SAT score good enough?

I don’t plan on applying to any ivy league schools. I am however considering schools like Duke, UC Berkeley, NYU, USC…

It surely wouldn’t hurt to take it again. If you are a junior then you have loads of time, most haven’t even taken it once yet, so you are way ahead of the game. I say take it again and then even another time if you have to.

definitely strong, and superior for NYU (and I think for USC) - competitive for Duke and Berkeley, but couldn’t hurt to be higher if you think you’re able to bring it up.

Many of these schools toss out writing. A 630CR is not competitive at Duke though with strong everything else it probably won’t keep you out of the other 3.

Yes you should retake the SAT.

Definitely retake it.

if you got like a 720, 740, 740, then I don’t think you really have to retake it. You can, though, I would because I aim high. HOWEVER, in your case, your scores are pretty imbalanced. And in this case you NEED to retake it, not just aiming for the best like the previous case.

IMO CR is very important for the highly selective colleges. I would advise additional prep for the CR and a third sitting for those schools, but your current score will be OK for others on your list.

It isn’t too hard to raise your CR from a 630 to a 700 or so, so retake. Buy Direct Hits (best SAT vocab book out there by far) and do a bunch of practice problems. I raised my CR score from a 650 to a 790 in a couple of months just by practicing from the blue book.

“Many of these schools toss out writing”

Which ones?

Definitely take it again.

You will probably increase your verbal score by 50 points next time, just to mere familiarity with the exam, and by avoiding silly mistakes you might have made the first time.

Given that most schools superscore, you have little or nothing to lose by doing so, even if you don’t study at all for the next sitting.

But I would study.

jkat:

why not apply to some Ivies?

I see no reason for you not to take a shot at some of them.
