I am trying to raise it to at least 3.7 - which is what I had before I transferred from another nice school - but because I work more than half time I have thus far been unable to succeed;I always get some surprise grades. I heard on this forum that 25% of people at SFS have 3.9 or higher and while I saw no sources I am pretty worried about my average. Any experience with something like this? BTW, this is for a rising junior.

It’s not even close to true that 25% of SFS students have a GPA >3.9; that would be ridiculous grade inflation. Although there’s some variation from year to year, something in the range of 3-5% is pretty standard. In my graduating class about 4% of people had a GPA over 3.9. That said, raising your GPA is always a good thing, and hitting 3.7 puts you into the honors range.

As for competitive internships, I don’t know what you’re specifically interested in, but in most cases GPA is not going to be the primary criterion for hiring. 3.62 is a bit on the low side, but it does put most things within reach provided that you have a strong resume to offer.

^No, honors is actually 3.5 and higher( Cum laude). 3.7 and higher is Magna cum laude, unless you are talking about individual semesters in which 3.7+ is “Second Honors”(magna) and 3.5 is Dean’s List, or so says my transcript.

BTW, is it worth including a Major GPA if I have taken only two major classes so far?

Don’t even list your GPA on your resume. It isn’t necessary. They aren’t going to take you just because you have a 3.93. They are going to take you based on their interest in you AND your prior experience.

^well, true about the prior experience but to be honest not many of us have extensive experience in relevant fields when we just closed our sophomore year.

^And BTW, I do not see why you place so much emphasis on experience. Is not the whole point of internships for your to GAIN experience? If I already had the experience I would go apply for a real job and get paid real money.

I don’t speak from personal experience, but I know someone who goes to college in DC (not Georgetown, but I’m sure you can guess which one), gets around a 3.5, and has had extremely “competitive” internships. Although grades help, it’s kind of like applying for elite colleges again- they will look at everything. The person I know is amazing with interviews, and had a good job history/ec’s in college, which is what got them hired over those with marginally better GPA’s.
