is 50 miles too long to commute to college

I plan on staying at home to save money and graduate with 0 debt. grants will pay the entire cost of tuition & books. the local 4 year university’s main campus is 25 miles from me,so that would be 50 going both ways. Im guessing it would be about an hour and a half drive.with toll, the cost of gas, and juggling a part time job. It almost seems impossible to me to do all that and have plenty of time to study and do homework. Is it worth it?

Or should I move 25 miles by the university and spend money on rent food etc that I could be saving for med school applications, flights, hotels and living expenses in med school? If I stay at home all will be free.

Or should I live on campus? I do have enough saved up to pay for the first 2 years of dorm living, and im sure I could get some type of grant for the last 2 or work to pay for it. But Id have to start from 0 again with my savings and take out loans for the application process of medical school.

Advice please. Thanks

25 miles isn’t much; that’s what, 20 minutes on a highway? I suppose it depends on the speed limit of your highway, but it should be somewhere around that.

If you can schedule all of your classes on the same two or three days (instead of four or five), then it should be even easier. When I did dual enrollment in high school, I often drove to the main campus of the local state college, which was around 25-30 miles away.

Ultimately, you need to decide what you are able to handle. Try driving it a few times, then see how you handle it; listening to music can be a good distraction.

That’s not bad, I do a 30 mile commute each way. I take the bus so it gives me a chance to do homework and work (I’m a grader).

I did live on campus last year, and while it was a good experience, I just couldn’t justify the cost for another year.

I drive 50 miles to and back every day. It is really not bad at all - better than I expected. Mine is an easy drive though - mostly highway and not a very busy one.

As someone else said, if you can schedule all your classes on say MWF, that can help. In my case I can not as I wanted to take Spanish and it is a 5 day a week class. Another thing to look at is how your classes are scheduled through the day. I have 2 days where I have a 2 hour gap and it is a real PITA and makes it a long day. I will be more careful to avoid that situation in future (if class availability allows).

If you don’t care about being part of the “campus community” then I suggest you commute. I would have done so if the option was available. You’ll be fine if you manage your time and as previous poster said, try to schedule your classes as close together as possible.

Good luck!
