Is 700 words too much for the main essay?

I’ve already gone through and tried to cut while retaining clarity. I think it’s a pretty tight essay, there’s just quite a bit to talk about [it’s the “something you outgrew” essay.]

Short answer: no.

Long Answer: No, UChicago doesn’t set a limit, therefore, as long as you feel you’ve been succinct, you ought to be fine. 700 words is not unreasonable for an essay.

No, mine was over 1000.

That said, make sure you are as concise as possible.

700 sounds readable to me. I don’t think Chicago has ever posted a word or character limit, but channel your inner Hemingway or Carver over your inner Dostoevsky.

No, mine was 1200+. Each of my supplements had 750 words (or so.) And yes, that was after I cut a lot out from 1000+.

Alright. Thanks all!

Unalove: What if one’s essay touches on Dostoevsky and not Hemmingway?

PK: My essay was more Dostoevsky than Hemmingway. Write however you write, just make sure other people can read it and know what the hell you’re trying to say.

S1’s was 1398 words. Make every word count.
