Freshman year: none offered

Sophomore year: ap European History (4 on exam)

now i’ll show you my perspective schedule, numbers representing periods
Junior:
- ap america history
- ap english
- honors german 4
- lunch
- house period
- honors pre-calc
- honors chemistry
- study center. i could possibly take this out, but then i would have virtually no time for extra curricular activities, like volunteering and figure skating.
- ap psychology

Senior:
- ap us gov
- ap english
- senior seminar (required)
- lunch
- house
- ap calc
- physics (no honors offered, ap can only be taken after regular)
- study center
- ap bio

I know 17 is a lot, these are what they have on offer. please read my comments next to them…i’m just really worried because i want to get into a really good school (not harvard, but maybe brown or some other slightly easier ivy league) and taking only 8 when my school offers 17 seems like not enough. but isn’t your extra curricular activities and having a passion just as important? especially if i get really good grades in these ap’s. i want to go to medical school, if that helps.

European History TAKEN
American History WILL TAKE
U.S. Government and Politics WILL TAKE
English 11 Writing WILL TAKE
English 12 Literature WILL TAKE
Biology POSSIBLY TAKE
Physics: I can’t see how to fit this into my schedule
Psychology WILL TAKE
French
Chemistry I can’t see how to fit this into my schedule
Calculus AB, Calculus BC WILL TAKE (1)
Statistics: not really that important, right?
Environmental Science: i couldn’t fit it in, and between ap bio and environmental i would pick ap bio because i am more interested in it
Java Programming: not interested
Art History not interested
Studio Art i love art, but i couldn’t possibly fit it in
Economics i would like to, but there’s no room!
German. my school only offered this because they want to rank higher and become a better school, when the two german teachers at our school are not at all good enough to teach it. one of them even admitted it! taking this would be a waste of time in my opinion because it would be virtually impossible.

please guys, help :)

Well, I think that just filling your schedule with APs just because it’s an AP is not a good reason, you know what I mean? take AP in the subjects that most interest you, so that you’ll care enough to do well and get a decent score on the AP exam. plus, craming AP’s into your life is stressful. You’ll do better with only taking 3-4 AP’s a year and getting A’s in them as opposed to your entire schedule being AP’s and getting B’s.

It doesn’t matter how many APs your schools offer. This look like a balance schedule to me though. As long as you keep the APs divided and not crammed most of it into one year you should be fine.

I took one my Sophomore year, 3 Junior Year, and I’ll have 4 senior year. I think staggering the load is a good way. I wish I had taken an AP freshman year too.

My son took 14 AP courses, and I don’t think it did him that much good.

So I would not worry about taking a million AP courses.

You have enough.

8 APs is still a lot and your schedule is still rigorous. It seems like you’re already taking as many as your schedule allows/that you can handle so you should be fine. My school offers like 20 APs but due to required classes, sports (which count as a class), etc. it’s impossible to take that many. I doubt most kids take more than 8 so you’re still ahead.

Thanks so much guys! I feel a lot better about my schedule now :)

I think it matters more on if you are passing AP exams of the ones you take and need those for what you plan to major in college. I think you would be unsuccessful if you crammed your schedule with all AP’s because you would just have too much to focus on. So taking 8 seems good, it even seems like a lot! My school offers every AP course and I have only taken 4 and am taking 2 more next year, so you’re ahead of me.

hell yeah ■■■■…you overachiever you!

In context, my school pretty much doesn’t let freshman take them…I’ve only taken 2 as a rising senior and I’m only taking 3 next year…good luck to you! [though I’m assuming you don’t have too much work for any of those classes if you can take 8 and not be vomiting from the stress…3 a semester is considered crazy here [then again…the workload is f***ing ridiculous].

No it’s incredible. As long as you took as many as your school and schedule permitted, you challenged yourself as best you could which is exactly what schools want to see. Additionally, overloading on APs unnecessarily makes it harder to do well on all o your exams while still staying actively involved in extracurriculars and community service!
