Assuming 2300+ SAT scores, decent ecs, and a very good essay. I also went there last summer and took gen chem (B+) and going back this year for the summer to take physics. Basicly should I do early action with my 94 or will it keep me out. I know its a crapshoot even with perfect grades but is a 94 low enough to keep me out? By the way my school dosent report rank but I would be 8/120. (The 94 is a result of low Hebrew grades which act as a composite score and lower 9th grade grades. As for the past 2 years my important subject like math, physics, history english have all been around a 99 with the exception of english as a 95ish.)

Thanks guys. This isnt really a chance thread just an indication if I should use my EA there. And yes Harvard is my first choice.

Regardless of GPA, has anyone from your high school been admitted to Harvard with a 94? If you don’t know, ask your guidance counselor, as each high school is different. At some high schools, a 94 is the absolute minimum that Harvard will accept. At other high schools, Harvard’s minimum GPA might be higher of lower. Bottom line, if Harvard is your #1 choice and you want to hear about a decision mid-December, then apply early if your high school has a good track record with Harvard and GPA’s like yours. If not, you might want to apply to a broader range of non-binding EA schools and apply to Harvard RD.

My school has only had one kid admitted to Harvard ever and that was like 20 years ago. Needless to say my school does not send kids to the ivys (maybe one every 4 years or so)

Then I think you should apply to Harvard RD and apply to a broad range of non-binding schools EA – schools such as UChicago, MIT, Georgetown, your state school etc. In that way, you will hopefully have at least one acceptance in your back-pocket come December and still have a shot at Harvard.

I don’t think 0.1 in the GPA makes any difference. They’re going to look at it more in the context of your other grades and the rigor of your coursework. Since you’re not off the charts even in the context of your own school, I think you are going to need a pretty big hook to stand out for Harvard, and I agree with Gibby that you should broaden your early search.

spuding102: My kids attended a large specialized math and science high school that regularly sends about 12 to 20 kids to Harvard every year. The school does not use Naviance, but has their own proprietary software to track college acceptances. Over the last ten years, Harvard has not taken one student with a GPA below 94 regardless of SAT/ACT scores. Not 1 student in 10 years! As your high school last sent a student to Harvard 20 years ago, I think I’m being realistic when I say your chances of being accepted SCEA to Harvard with a 94 or 93.9 are slim to none. You would be wasting your early slot applying to Harvard. You should apply to a broad range of non-binding “target” school early, and apply to Harvard RD. Best of luck to you!

Your class rank is more telling here than your GPA. I don’t mean to offend, but if Harvard rarely accepts people from your school, do you think they are likely to accept the 8th best student from your school on any given year?

You are obviously a good student and you will get into a great school but the sheer selectivity of Harvard is working against you.

The thing is that the kids from my school who are ranked higher than me are COMPLETE idiots. Their SAT scores are horrendous and their grades are as a result of them taking the easiest classes available. These students also rarely apply to the ivies as a result of their low SATs
