Is a 187 score on the PSAT good?

OK, so I’m going to take the PSAT on October 18. Currently I’m in 7th grade. I haven’t given the actual exam yet but I’ve given 2 practice test from Barron’s and scored a 187 on both of them. I would like to know if that’s any good.

Yes that is very good. Have you looked into the Johns Hopkins University Talent Search program? It might be worth your while to take the SAT test in December or January for that. You need to apply to the talent search about two months prior to the test date. With a high enough score, there are some benefits.

Why are you doing this? Do you need a score for a program you’re applying to?

I wish people didn’t judge a person’s writing ability based on CC posts. For a lot of people, a discussion board is not much more serious than a text. Further, in many English speaking cultures outside USA, “giving an exam” is the correct idiom. Anyone who has read a lot of CC posts should know that.

This was in response to posts that have since been removed from the discussion, but I am leaving this one as an excellent comment on harsh remarks that are completely unwarranted and unnecessary. - FC

Getting back to your question, I’m not sure what you’re asking. Is your score any good for what? As far as I can tell, it’s not good for anything. The PSAT is a scholarship competition open only to high school juniors. You could not win anything now even with a perfect score.

If you’re asking is it “good” for a 7th graders, well that depends what your standards of “good” are. I’m not going to look up the score charts because you can do that yourself if you want to compare yourself to high school juniors. I think it’s not a very useful comparison to make because you’re not even close to being a high school junior and there’s really no way to predict how much you might improve in the four years you have until you would take this test for real. If you browse through threads like this you will see that some people make bigger gains in one year than others do in several years.

How “good” were you at middle school work back in 3rd grade? Would it have made sense to take those tests then or to worry about your score?

Read quality materials, make sure you understand the math you’re learning at school and enjoy not having to worry about these tests yet.

Well I was just hoping to test my skills since I get pretty good grades in school. And, yes I’m aware that I can’t win anything.

I’m just taking the PSAT for the sake of taking it not to prepare for the SAT, get a scholarship or anything like that. I’m giving the ACT not the SAT so I don’t need to prep for it.

I don’t really care about my score.

I’ll take that advice.Thank you for your help.
