And what entry-level jobs could I land with this degree?
No, it is not worthless. If you have strong grades, examples of the type of company you could possibly get a job with are Accenture, Deloitte, EY, or KPMG. They all hire intro level consultants.
Georgia State University have a few graduates that work for AT&T. I’m sure there are more companies that just the one I know for an fact that heavily hire MIS grads from GSU.
I’ll be attending Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. Does the school that I obtain the degree from matter?
Yes and no. There are some companies (like the Big 4 accounting companies intparent listed) and some jobs (like strategy consulting and investment banking) that do put a premium on where their employees graduated from college. But in terms of just getting a job in the field, no, it doesn’t matter where you go to school.
I think one of the best things you can do is talk to some professors or departmental administrators at Fayetteville State and ask them: Where do your graduates end up? What kinds of jobs do they take? Career services might keep records of this information as well, so you might also check with them.
If you can minor in CS it’ll be helpful no matter where oh graduate from because it’ll signal your ability to handle abstract concept and apply them, plus your willingness to work hard.
Marketing is the perhaps one of the most maligned degrees and my B.S. In Business Administration with emphasis in marketing has served me well, not because of the name on the page but the knowledge gained. My current profession has nothing to do with my degree.
I don’t believe any business degree is ever useless. Except for specailtis like Investment Banking mentioned above, most any business degree will serve you well. If you have very specific goals, you have plan more carefully in undergraduate but even then, only so many people can go to Wharton and other top schools.
