Is a car a necessity?

If you live at garnet riverwalk apartments is the shuttle adequate or is a car needed? Are the cabs reliable? Just thinking of getting to campus on weekends etc… Thanks

might get more response on facebook page, University of south carolina class of 20xx to find opinions from actual students

I would suspect that it depends on your curriculum, class schedule, activities, and how big ones social circle is (with friends who have cars).

Last year my son rarely used his car, but he lived on campus. Next year he will be living in private apartments, but they happen to be adjacent to the campus and very close to both of the buildings that he will be having class in, so I doubt that he would actually need a car.

Im not sure where Garnet Riverwalk is, but some of the off campus housing that we looked at really wouldn’t be doable for my son, because his first class starts at 8AM and he frequently has on campus activities until 11pm or later, so places like Riverside and other housing that is a few miles away from campus wouldn’t work for him without a car.

Most everyone I know who lives off-campus has a car and I’ve heard the shuttles aren’t super reliable.

If you end up with a night class (which is quite common at USC), it can be a problem, because shuttles usually only run until 4 or 5 in the afternoon.

I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary, but it’d probably be a huge pain not to have one. That’s the main reason why I chose to live on campus again this year. I’m a Theatre major and am often on campus until really late at night for plays. I also have a night class next semester.

My cousin lives at Garnet River and she told me awhile ago that you need a car if you’re going to live there.
