If I want to program apps, is it worth it to major in computer science, or should I just major in something else and learn programming on the side?
As per the responses in [url = <a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/other-college-majors/1837886-do-you-have-to-major-in-comp-sci-to-learn-how-to-program-apps.html%5Dyour”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/other-college-majors/1837886-do-you-have-to-major-in-comp-sci-to-learn-how-to-program-apps.html]your other thread, if all you want to do is program apps then you don’t need to major in CS.
Do you have an idea of what kind of apps you want to program? If you do, my suggestion is to major in something related to what kinds of apps you want to program and learn programming on the side. Or perhaps you could minor in CS in addition to your chosen major so you have a slightly more extensive CS background beyond just programming?
@PhantomVirgo I want to program a social media app…something that will make texting easier. Something like WhatsApp, but a little better. I have some solid ideas, but I have no clue how to start. But thanks for the suggestion! Appreciate it!
If you are attending a school with a CS department, you may want to make use of it by taking some CS courses, whether or not you major in CS.
@ucbalumnus Would you mind explaining why?
It is generally easier to learn CS with the assistance of instructors than to learn CS on your own. If you are attending a college with CS courses, why not take advantage of their availability?
