Is a minor in architecture good for anything?

I might couple that with a physics major, but I’m not sure it would have any practical applicability.

I think it will make you a more broadly educated person and provide you with strong creative and problem solving skills.

rick

from what i understand, if you’re in a b.arch program you probably wouldn’t be able to study much else seriously as it’s very demanding.

at b.s.arch programs i think they would focus more on incorporating physics with architecture, but im really not sure.

Well, I looked at the degree plan more closely. There are several physics elective courses I want to take, so I can really only minor in math with all the math courses I’ll already be taking!

If you really want to be an architect

i know someone who went to CSUlongbeach as a Physics major and is now in uclas grad m.arch program.

If you want to be a licensed architect you must have a masters degree to sit for the licensing examination… or at least, in my state you do.

In my opinion, a minor in arch. would probably give you a nice rounded background, but that’s about it. You wouldn’t really be able to get licensed or anything.

Do you know if this is a state requirement in Ohio, or because the only accredited arch programs in Ohio are MArchs?

To sit for the exam in Ohio, the education requirement states only that you must have a “professional degree” from a program accredited by the NAAB. You do NOT have to have a M.Arch. degree if you have an NAAB-accredited B.Arch.

It’s pretty complicated in NYS, but as you can see strictly speaking you don’t have to go to an NAAB accredited program, but it’s easier and more efficient. [NYS Architecture - Licensure Requirements](http://www.op.nysed.gov/archlic.htm)

A minor in architecture is probably most useful if you want to get a taste of architecture to decide whether to go to a master’s program. It might be useful for some careers like interior design or real estate.

In Illinios you only need a BS in Architecture Studies (pre-professional 4-year degree) to ge licensed. But that is changing. As of Jan 1, 2014, Illiinois will be requiring a BArch to get licensed. I don’t know why they made the date so far in the future.

Perhaps to give the instate schools time to transition their programs and get accredited.

The primary reason to set the date several years into the future is to give those people who have already started a non-accredited program (or have already received the BS degree) to have enough time to finish and get in the required number of IDP hours so that they can still take the exam before the eligibility rules change. It wouldn’t be fair to suddenly change the rules and disqualify people who invested 4 years of tuition to get the BS degree, thinking they could become licensed architects.

That makes sense
