We’ve pretty much got my “son” all squared away in his new dorm. I have one question/complaint though. When he moved in he had to fill out a sheet listing anything wrong with the room and then return it to the front desk.

Well there were two big issues. The first one was that one of the toilet seats was broken in half. I don’t mean cracked, I mean the left half of it was missing. The other one was he had two big holes in his bedroom door. They didn’t go all the way through the door so it’s not a privacy issue but it’s definitely an eyesore.

Anyway does he need to fill out/call in a special work order or will these be fixed since he listed the damage on his move-in sheet?

Also, why the hell weren’t these things fixed before move-in? He’s paying $3750 a semester for his dorm room (out of pocket/no scholarship). Surely housing had time since the end of spring semester to inspect each room and fix the things that needed fixing before move-in. Everything else went great and son is very happy, but this sort of has me irritated a bit.

What dorm is your S/D in Mike? My son is in ridgecrest east. Everything else was great, even looked like they had new furniture in the rooms. I just don’t understand why they wouldn’t have inspected and completed the work on every room during the 3 months since they were last lived in.

I’d definitely file a work order.
BTW, I’m in Ridgecrest South this year, and when I moved in on Tuesday, I noticed that my room’s Ethernet adapter was nonexistent- that is, the lead wires were there, but the panel & Ethernet jack clearly were not. Sure, I could pretty easily fix it myself if I had the proper tools (Ethernet wiring is the IT equivalent of paint-by-numbers; all you have to do is match up color-coded wires) but I put in a work order anyway. At 7 in the morning, roughly 5 hours after I submitted my work order, a techie came by and fixed the panel. Not bad…

NJBama: Ridgecrest East was used for summer housing. I know this, because the day my son moved in (August 6 – he was helping with the move ins on the 7th and 8th), we saw several students loading their cars for a move out. So that damage could have happened this summer. The R.A. handling check out probably noted it (trust me, they do like to bill you for damages).

Besides filing the work order, make sure your son lets his R.A. know what is happening. Sometimes the R.A. can give housing or maintenance a little push.

I’d file a work order for any issues involving the bathrooms. For the door and any issues involving paint missing or wall discoloration, talk to the RA and see if it’s an issue. I know that my room’s walls were already listed as “acceptable” rather than “excellent” since there are places where you can tell something was stuck on the wall and some paint discoloration, but I’m just going to mention it again to my RA so I don’t get charged for it. Due to the fact that it is a college dorm and was built quite quickly, not everything in a student’s room is going to be perfect. That said, if a previous student was fined for damage to their dorm room, that damage should have been fixed over the summer so that the next renter won’t be fined for it.

My DS is in Lakeside West. We noted that the toilet was running on move-in. They had it repaired before we left that day. I also noted on the form a large ink stain on the couch. Don’t know if that will be fixed or not. Also, DS’s cable was not working on that Sunday(last week). We reported that and is was working the next morning. So, major problems seemed to fixed immediately. Couch probably won’t be fixed. Glad I reported it though! The repairs may have been done quickly as not as many students were moving in a week early…
