10 on the writing good? This is a 10 on the essay, not the combined writing score.

Yes. It’s on a scale of 2-12, so a 10 is pretty decent.

Is it good enough for top colleges (more specefically, perhaps Vassar or Wesleyan? Grinnell too)

Yes (10 characters)

I got a ten on the essay and got into Wes, so, yes.

Not to be rude, but what is so good about Wesleyan and Vassar? Are they top colleges? Do they compare with the Ivy League, Stanford, etc.?

Wes and Vassar are top LACs. They don’t quite campare with HPY/Stanford (the most common LAC analogy there would be Williams, Amherst and Swarthmore, though some would argue that various other schools belong on that list). People can argue whether they campare to the lower Ivies or not, but most in the know would agree that they (and many other top LACs) compare nicely with top Unis, though the focus is different.

Wes and Vassar are particuarly known for hippy/alternative/uber-liberal student bodies. Comperable to Brown in atmnosphere, though probably more so. For someone who wants that kind of atmosphere and liks LACs, Wes and Vassar are hard to beat (which might be why the OP is particuarlly asking about them).

That’s what I thought, but I just wanted to be sure. Their probably both really good private colleges…

schools don’t just look at the writing score alone. those schools you mentioned have the median act of 30-31 so if you’re not an urm you need 32+ to be competitive. their % of student in top 10% of hs class are 65%+ and % of student in top 25% of hs class are 90%+ so you may want to think about these factors as well.
