Is "Administrative Assistant" job worth it for undergrad students?

I’m an undergraduate student and found out there are so many Administrative Assistant positions in various departments of my school provided by the work-study program. Will working this job be a good resume builder? Or would it be completely ineffective except it gets you an income? How does it look on resume for science/engineering majors?

Thank you!

If it does not decrease your GPA, then it is better then nothing. But leadership activities, volunteer service, productive extracurricular activities and/or student organization involvement will all contribute more than a secretary job. If you are already doing all of those, and it still will not decrease your GPA, then go ahead if you feel like it. It will help you some. But not much.

One thing about AA is that you actually work for people in the department. By the time they get to know you, they can help you a lot when you request something to do within the department.

Resume builder? The point of an undergraduate resume should not be limited to only research and research. Having different job experiences can be very handy and valuable.

When I was a high school student I interned in the principal office and the copy center. I knew all the secretaries and clerks in the school. Whenever I had problems, they would all help me out. My personal life back then was a mess. Thank god I worked for them.

As Serious said, as long as it doesn’t start hurting your grades you’ll be fine. Employers like to see that you work, anywhere. It shows you can balance well. I was a bus boy and worked at a deli. While these didn’t give me firsthand experience because I was able to maintain a good gpa and be involved employers ate it up.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Absolutely. I did it as a grad student on work-study. My grades didn’t hurt. The experience definitely helped in getting recommendations and gaining some skills that employers are looking for. Being in this position has some positive qualities to it- it shows that you’re responsible, organized with information and people, and competent at basic computer and telephone skills.

Umm, yes. Be grateful you don’t have to just work food or retail.
