Is an Inspiron 15 7000 powerful enough?

I know there are plenty of threads dealing with engineering computers but I can’t find what I’m looking for. I’ll be majoring in engineering and getting my laptop and I want the Inspiron 15 7000, however some reviews say it comes up a little short on performance. Then there is the xps 15’s which are extremely powerful but just so expensive. With insurance and everything the xps 15 will be about $700 more than the Inspiron. So my question is do I need to spend the extra money and get the xps 15 so it will be able to run the engineering programs or will the Inspiron 15 7000 be able to handle the programs just fine? Thanks

Sorry I don’t know how to edit but just to be clear I don’t care about gaming performance or anything else I just want to make sure the laptop I get will be able to handle the engineering programs smoothly.

Yes, it looks like a good laptop (although it does look like it’s trying to be a Macbook…)
There are a couple of options within the 7000 series, so what specs/model are you looking at?
