Is an ipad actually worth it for high school/what to get

i was thinking of getting an ipad air due to the student discount right now, but don’t want to waste $$.

i can’t use it in school, but it might be useful and a lot of ppl say to get it.

other options are to get an e-ink tablet (like a Remarkable) or something else for school, maybe a nice desk or chair.

i could also just invest it. or give it to my parents.

what would you do if you had $600 for something school related?

If you don’t have a use for it, don’t buy it, no matter how good the deal is.

Is the $600 yours or does it belong to your parents?

some of it is mine, my parents gave me a little extra to use on school stuff after ap results.

Do you have a job of any kind? If so, I’d put it into a Roth IRA and not look at it for a long time. Otherwise, save it for spending money in college.

Electronics start depreciating immediately. The same money will buy something better in the future. If you don’t have a specific need and use for it right now, bank the money until you do. You’ll be eligible for student discounts for years to come.

I agree. Wait until you have a technology need. One of my kids had to get an iPad in professional school because ALL of their texts were available for far less cost on the IPad. She also uses it for work.

So…save your money for when you actually NEED something and know how you will use it.

Put in a 30 day or three month cd and roll it over and over til you find something useful for it. Don’t buy something just to buy something.

Wait til there’s something you truly need.

In the meantime let your money make money.

I love my iPad. I don’t think I’ll ever buy a macbook or iMac again. That being said, I agree not to get it unless you have a use for it. However, if you ever do need a device for school/college, I highly recommend it. Even at full price, it’s much more “worth it” than a macbook imo.

this specific discount is only in the summer. it’s $150 off in summer and $50 off otherwise.

They have different models. By the time you need, you might say - wish I waited. Stuff gets updated.

no job, so I think that means I can’t contribute to a Roth IRA. i do have a little money in ETFs i could add to. my parents also have some relatively high interest debt so maybe my best decision would just be to give it to them.

good point. i will say though i do want one for school, even if not for a specific use case and i’d appreciate having one at times. (plus the Air just came out)

So?

The purpose of such limited time offers is to manufacture urgency.

But something you don’t need is never urgent. Next summer’s limited time offer will be for a better product.

I think the biggest factor in your decision making should be this:

As others have said, electronics depreciate every single year as new models come out. Plus, whats the need for an iPad if you cant even use it at school? I’ve had several different classmates use iPads in our last year of high school, and they used it often for class notes and a lot more. But if you cant even use it, there’s legitimately no need for you to get an iPad just for it to sit around.

I think you should just save the money for college, and consider getting a tablet then. When you get to that point, if you decide to also opt for a laptop, a top-of-the-line tablet can run you $$$.

fair, i believe the sale ends in late September so I could just wait it out and see if it would actually be of use during the school year. otherwise i’d just use it for SAT/ACT and reading recreationally but probably not worth it then.

@hazy you make it sound like there is one sale and once it ends, there are no more discounts. That is not accurate. As a college student, Apple gives discounts for purchasing their devices. Some colleges also have discounts. Apple offers discounts to everyone periodically.

IOW, this isn’t the last sale you will see on an IPad. Trust me…when you NEED to buy one, there will be some sort of discount available.

Yes, I am very familiar with their discounts. The year-round discount is $50 and the “Back to School” is a $100 gift card (which would go towards the Pencil)

I have decided, though, to delay the purchase until I can confirm its actual utility to me in school.
