Is Anti-intellectualism To Blame For America's Problems?

Thank you for answering my question, awc.

“If we want to discuss what’s to blame for America’s problems, then let’s talk about the TEACHERS UNIONS”

– Reductionist, much?

@tv4caster

Across ALL immigrant nationalities?

Nigerian & indians are among the most economically successful groups, surpassing native-born white americans. I don’t see much in the media about pregnant teenage nigerian & indian immigrant girls.

Some comic relief from the intellectuals, specifically the scientists that so many here want to always follow:

Keep spending your money on those pills though, just in case they change their minds back in a couple years.

Without getting into the merits of these particular pills (or where I"m sure you’re heading - climate change and evolution) … don’t you believe in science and the scientific method in general though? Or are you a relativist when it comes to truth?

Both the left & the right are guilty of intellectual dishonesty.

I try to follow science regardless of ideology; I’m funny that way.

@GMTplus7 I didn’t say across every nationality because he didn’t. He lumped them all together and I was talking collectively as well.

Here’s the data on TP

http://www.hhs.gov/ash/oah/adolescent-health-topics/reproductive-health/teen-pregnancy/trends.html

That is the link I showed earlier

Oh, oops. Well, that shows Hispanics and Blacks in a dead heat. No data on sub-cultures. No data on multiply pregnancies and the involvement of the sperm donor.

What is impressive about that chart is the marked decline over the 23 year period. Obviously, there is still room for improvement but some programs must be working.

The good news in that chart is that the TP rate has decreased steadily for all groups. It is less than half what it was in 1990. Pretty amazing!

This is the typical mask with statistics game that I expected. Again, all too predictable. It is the let’s lump all of them together, never put context in place, and make it seem like everyone is the same and maybe I snow some people that I have an intellectual point.

I kind of expected this nonsense. That is why on my one post, I actually listed the immigrant groups that are represented in our intern group.

In addition to the Nigerians and Indians, add the Muslims in Michigan, the Somalis in Maine, the Sudanese in Minnesota, and a few more, and none of these have the 70% out of of wedlock pregnancy rate or the poverty rate of the native-born black populations, and that includes the immigrants who got here with less than nothing.

Now, the current crop of illegal latino immigrants being added that may end up being a different story, but that is way too new as to be an unknown.

The issue, and the really only salient issue, is the majority of the native-born black population is stuck, after 60 years of “help” by intellectual social programs in the same or worse situation. And the out of wedlock births and teenage pregnancy rates are now the main downfalls, as the females and males can never get out of the rut. There is something just completely wrong there for that to be the case after 60 years of social programs that were / are designed by the best and the brightest.

EDIT - It should be added that the pregnancy rates are the outcome of other behaviors that an IUD program will never solve. There needs to be a change in school habits, work habits, understanding how the mainstream culture works, and the general acceptance of responsibility for oneself outside of government assistance. IUDs will not affect any of the other behaviors and actually reinforces the issue of government help and reduced personal responsibility.

Talk to me 30 years, and we will see if as a whole immigrants are stuck in poverty like a lot of of the black population has been for 60 years. Somehow, I highly doubt it given that immigrants from the last 20 years have not shown to be stuck in poverty now. (Again, the current wave of latinos illegal immigrants may represent a different story and they are starting to mimic ghettoes in some places - too soon to know.)

However, I can safely predict that the ghettoes we see now will definitely be there in 30 years; 70% of kids will without fathers in the home; Chicago will still be a black-kill-black free fore zone; and, the people will still be complaining and waiting for government to get them out. So far, immigrant groups, regardless of their birthrate, have not exhibited this of this type of stagnant behavior as intact communities.**

** It should be noted that there is now Haitian and Jamaican communities that have, unfortunately, adopted behavior similar to black ghettoes in Miami and a couple other places. But, their numbers are still very small, but their trajectory is not looking too good.

Someone has been clearly paying attention.

The numbers are posted. We can read. Birth rates for teen age blacks are declining.

Birth control works.

Irritating that studies w racial breakdowns never include asian statistics.

I remember a NPR segment from the 90s on the effects implantable birth control was having.

Does the declining teen pregnancy rate mean we can all come out from under our beds? That the fundamentalist boogey men are the product of some overactive imaginations?

YOU are the one who lumped them all together. YOU said “immigrant females are not getting pregnant at high rates”. Had you said “certain immigrant females are not getting pregnant…” it would have been different. I also want to see statistics to back up your claim (other than anecdotes). I certainly haven’t seen any proof of what you claim (not to say that it doesn’t exist, I just haven’t seen it yet).

The problem with this argument is that many of the immigrant populations that you mentioned have had, and will have, an easier path because of fewer obstacles place in their path. I say that because my impression is that many Americans have empathy for immigrants who left war-torn countries like Somalia, and are far more tolerant than they are of inner city blacks. The other issue is that for the past 60 years there has been a culture in this country where many policies and circumstances have been in place to keep blacks from having the same chances as whites.

Don’t get me wrong: you raise some valid points. I think there have certainly been problems with some of the decisions that certain groups have made re single parent households, etc. I just don’t think the answers are as black and white (no pun intended) as you think with regards to the causes.
