Over the last few years I have been buying pyrex glass food storage containers and insisting my family not microwave in plastic anymore.
I have started to keep my eyes open for deals for housewares for son who will be getting an apartment next year.
Costco has a nice set of food storage containers - Rubbermaid Brilliance. They get great reviews on Costco as well as Amazon. https://www.costco.com/Rubbermaid-Brilliance-18-piece-Food-Storage-Set.product.100365957.html
Looks like they are made out of some kind of acrylic, maybe? They say microwave safe (meaning they won’t get wrecked in the microwave), but does that mean they are a safe type of plastic for humans to heat food in?
Anyone have any insight on these or “safe” plastic in general? Thank you!
I wouldn’t do it, but it’s possible I’m paranoid. Google Trtian and BPA and phalates and you’ll see some articles questioning whether it’s safe.
The recent news of 90% table salts contain plastic particles made me really really sad.
We use Pyrex glass containers exclusively, and avoid using plastics when possible.
I assume your not using glass wares with your DS is because of dorm requirement? My DS will continue use glass wares in school till he is asked not to. However, I am not sure it is possible to really not “consume” plastics in this day and age anymore.
@makemesmart DS only has a ceramic soup mug in his dorm. No food storage containers. He eats at the dining hall. I am looking for things to buy for his apartment with friends next year when he moves out of the dorms. I could do pyrex glass, but plastic seems more practical, lighterweight and easier to store with a group of guys in an apartment.
@suzy100 These are BPA free…
