Is anybody still on dial up?

Surprise! I purchased a new PC for my parents for their birthdays. Their old computer is really old and probably loaded with viruses/spyware. So, time for a new PC!

I have been a MAC user for so long now, I am out of touch with PCs. I also have cable internet, but they use dial up for their internet.

Questions:

They currently use AOL for their dial-up internet. Is that the best choice seeing that they want to stay with dial-up? How to I get AOL on their new PC? Do I need to get a disc from AOL or can I download something on my MAC to transfer to their PC? I really don’t want to transfer from their old computer so I don’t have any chance of transferring viruses/spyware to their new computer.

Thanks for your help!

Momlove, it probably wouldn’t be much more expensive for them to have DSL if it is available where they live. Check with AOL for availability:

[AOL Broadband](http://broadband.aol.com/broadband/faqs.adp)

For DSL, all they need is a DSL modem and their existing phone line. You can do the “installation” yourself - it is very easy.

So true, maybe they could try dsl or cable for a couple of months…SO much more efficient!
(or maybe you could make that their Christmas present!

Ahhh, dial up. I remember those days.

Can you imagine how long it would take to post here, if we all still had dial up? :)

DD became a die hard YouTube fan when YouTube was still in its baby stages. We still had dialup. We couldn’t figure out why she was spending so much time on the Internet - well, it took her hours to download a 30-second clip  Once, when she showed us something funny, H said “It is time to move into the 21st Century!”
The only good thing about dialup was that %#@*$ telemarketers were getting a busy signal when they tried to call us!

Still on dial-up—for one more week. Have to upgrade cable from analog to digital, so we figured it was time to upgrade internet service as well.

Most websites today are designed with the expectation that no one’s still on dial-up, as they are so graphic-intensive.

My parents live in an area where there is only dial up available. When I visit, I very nearly toss my poor innocent laptop out of the window.

Life is too short to use dialup.

Years ago, my folks got a computer. My dad liked to use the internet at our house to help with his crossword puzzles. We’ve had broadband for many years.

Once the pc was purchased, we called the cable company to get them hooked up for the internet (dial up was not ever going to be considered). Well they live in a senior citizen complex. Cox came out and lo and behold, my folks were the 1st to even ask for the internet connection. What should have taken a small amount of time to do the installation, it took 3 days because Cox had to wire the entire complex!!

lol

Dial-up is so 20th century

Still on dial-up. When the other options are as cheap as our local dial-up provider, maybe we’ll change.

The cheapest DSL option is normally about the same price as dial-up.

$12.95 per month.

What DSL do you have?

Netscape is $9.99 a month.

Dial…up…is…per…fect…ly…ad…e…quate.

Lol, Hunt! It is as if you were chanelling my 70 y/o mother. It drives my two Ss crazy when we visit, but she insists that “cable is just too expensive”.

My 86 year old neighbor and her 90 year old husband still have dial up. I told her that of all people in the world, they NEED high speed internet. They don’t have much time left on this earth, so every minute they spend waiting for their slow internet is very precious time.

They laugh…

Cartera45, isn’t Netscape dial up? Isn’t Netscape a unit of AOL?

My mom is ready to jump on board with the DSL; my dad is a little… tight… and doesn’t see the need to. Once they get the new computer up and running we’ll see …how…slow…dial…up…is… Ha ha Hunt!

Looks like the cheapest I can find in their area is $25 a month, versus $10 a month for AOL that they are currently paying. My 80-year-old mom is on facebook now, thanks to my sister, and I have a feeling the family pictures she wants to look at are going to be painfully slow to view on dial up ;)

Yes, Netscape is dial up and I hate it. I only use it when I visit my mom who lives in the middle of nowhere - technologically speaking. She would get cable if it were available.
