Jasdad and I are seriously exploring retirement options (someplace warm) and have been eying the Savannah area. Hubby is an avid golfer and swimmer, thus the draw of a community with easy access to golf and a pool. I want a decent arts community. Anyone live in the area? Would appreciate info about the intangibles, social (acceptance of diverse opinions and receptivity to transplants), other quality of life issues. From web searches the climate seems no more humid than more inland areas. Is that how you’ve experienced it? Traffic congestion? Other things we might want to know about the area? Thanks!
My in-laws used to have a beach house on Hilton Head and we went to Savannah quite a bit. It’s a beautiful city and definitely more laid back and artsy than Charleston or other retirement islands nearby. SCAD is in town and is getting bigger every year. There are many retirees so I assume people would be welcoming but I don’t really know.
There are so many retirement communities you could join there, or nearby in coastal South Carolina or Florida. I would suggest you talk to your tax advisor and research local politics to see what is most advantageous or find out what may be least likely to drive you crazy!
P.S. My H knows someone who retired to one of those Georgia islands and it is so small that they don’t allow cars. Everyone gets around in golf carts and leaves their car on the mainland in some affiliated lot. They were very happy there.
Jasmom, we have a second home in Hilton Head and are here at the moment. Savannah is about 35 minutes away from our community. We have had our place for five years, after extensive research, and viewing 22 homes in four different communities. We had very specific parameters and had some very good options. Our community has two 18 hole courses and one 9 hole, great practice facilities, two beautiful clubhouses, tennis, a pool, fitness centre, 24 hour manned security. The Island has a lovely arts centre where the productions are great, and there is also a symphony orchestra. PM me and I’d be happy to answer any of your questions.
