Is applying to only uc's considered stupid?

im basically positive im going to a uc, but is it a bad idea in general to not apply to any private schools? the cost of private schools is a setback, and there are not really any private schools i have a genuine interest in. i cant really think of reasons why it’d be a bad move, but it just seems kind of risky for some reason as if im only applying to 1 school.

No it is not risky so long as you have a decent resume. Definately apply to different level schools though.
Tier 1
UCB
UCLA
UCSD

Tier 2
UCD
UCSB
UCI

Tier 3
UCSC
UCR
UCM

Maybe choose one from each tier. Good luck to you dude.

I applied to private schools and it was basically a waste of time and money. If you know you want to be here at the UCs, then do it. If you think of a couple of schools you might wanna apply to, you should do that.

hmm…also, does each individual uc know what other ucs i apply to and take that into account of admissions (i.e. if they are reluctant to admit me and see that i have some safeties in the lower tiers they wont feel bad rejecting me from a top tier)?

I highly doubt it but don’t know for sure.

I felt the same way as you and only applied to UCs which was convenient since I only had to fill out one college appliction. Some friends, teachers and family thought it was weird that I didn’t apply to any privates, but I don’t regret it at all.

Don’t apply to a school that you don’t want to go to, but you might want to research some private schools to see if there’s any that you like. As for price, the private schools might offer more financial aid to offset the higher cost.

I would at least apply to more than one UC though.

Nah, apply to whatever schools you want to. I applied basically to Cal and UCSD, no private schools; I honestly didn’t want to bother wasting much of my senior year filling out college applications! So I just filled out one.

No, they don’t.

And it’s fine to only apply to UCs. Hey, UCs are your bag. Keep in mind that even though it’s “one” application, you are actually applying to many schools, and unless you are a horrible student you will probably get into at least one UC.

Do you have to pay extra money to apply to extra UCs?

Yes, applying to each UC costs about $60 (forgot the exact amount). So applying to 2 UCs will cost $120.

The UCs are very high ranking schools compared with the rest of the nation. It’s no shame applying to just them. Barring Stanford and CalTech, there are only a handful of other privates that are highly sought after (Harvey Mudd comes to mind).

That’s correct.

All UCs are fantastic schools and offer an excellent education (well, Merced is still questionable - LOL). But, depending on your financial situation, a private school could be less expensive out of pocket to your family. For example, Cal will likely exceed $25k next year (no excuse for its outrageous dorm costs). If your efc is $25k, you’ll have to pay full freight. However, a private school might offer you $25k in grants to make it the same (or less) out-of-pocket that to attend Cal or other UC. Private schools also offer smaller classes, better counseling, etc.

Don’t forget that nearly all campuses were swamped with Frosh this year. Davis and LA are turning double dorm rooms into triples and singles into doubles. Now the UC dorms aren’t known to be particularly spacious to begin with, and PR rates them as dungeons…for the same money you could attend a priavate school with a single! Or, investigate Univ of Pacific – they provide merit money to kids with decent stats and the school could be cheaper than a UC. If you are a NMSF, U$c will give you a (nearly) automatic $15k discount – in you are financially needy, it would also be likely to be less expensive than a UC.

But if you wanna stay in Calif, the UCs are the best state Uni system in the world.

Good luck,

I only applied to UC schools for the same reason as you. I consequently go to a UC now and am happy with it. To me, most private schools just aren’t worth it.

Anyone who thinks that 1) UCR/UCI/UCSC and UCM are at the same level or 2) UCI is noticeably better than UCR or UCSC needs to look a bit closer.

Tier 1
UCB
UCLA

Tier 1.3
UCSD

Tier 2
UCD/UCSB

Tier 2.5
UCI/UCR/UCSC

Tier 3
UCM

^ thats a weird way to put it, but okay. i think UCI shud be a little more on top. i am also only applying to UC’s. why waste money on applying to otehr private schools or out of state if youre not even going to go there. smart choice. cheap, and get a good education.

Look a bit closer at what? Your own personal ranking system?

Probably the actual schools, their resources, and their students.

Yeah, I’m one of those who would prefer to stay in California and the UC system only makes it that much easier to pick a college. So besides Stanford, CalTech, USC, and the Claremont consortium colleges, theres not a whole lot of top-notch privates in California.

pepperdine is good too. nice campus and nice location. although it is too close to home and supposedly very conservative.

Eh, Pepperdine? I’d mention Occidental far before Pepperdine.
