Is being in UCSD something to be very proud about?

This sounds like a stupid question lol but just asking (without any other prejudices, mocking or whatever. just asking whole heartedly)

Do all the students except for maybe biology students feel that they are failure students of not getting into LA or Cal?

I’m asking really because I have no access because I am an international student. I got into cal berkeley but I am doing Bioengineering so thats why I chose SD. Is my decision good? or realistically should I be going to Cal?..

Should I be extremely proud about getting into UCSD? or is it not such a hard school to get into? Thanks so much!

hello, im an incoming freshman like u, so i can’t really answer if ppl are “proud” to be at SD, but i saw this in another thread and thot it related:

quote astrina:

UCSD is known for science, but as astrina said, u might not wanna base your whole decision on ur major. Berkeley is the highest rank UC and definitely a lot more recognized than SD. then again some ppl here have chosen SD over Cal.
but it also depends on ur type. they’re 2 very diff. schools from what i’ve heard.

hope that helps…

a genuine question deserves a genuine answer:

i’m curious why you need others’ opinions to decide whether you’re proud to attend UCSD. shouldn’t this be a personal reflection of who you are and what you’ve had to go through to get where you are? just because you have a setback or two doesn’t AT ALL determine your value as an individual. cause if that’s the case, then maybe all the harvard rejects (~92% of total applicants) should be jumping off bridges right now.

but in closing: you should be.

i am in the same position as you happyiaow…i am a us citizen living abroad and have chosen UCSD as the place where i hope to spend my coming years! honestly i am so proud to be going to UCSD because i know it is an amazing school! i chose it over a full scholarship at mt holyoke and do not regret my decision at all! i am so excited about attending UCSD even though i am coming from very far away! u shuld be very proud about attending UCSD! hope to meet you in the fall…!

UCSD is a great campus and excels at Biology and a few others. It is also a UC campus and UC campuses are considered part of the 8 original public Ivy campuses. In some areas, it pwns both Berkeley and UCLA, so, I don’t know what standard you’re looking for but yeah that’s really good.

What do you want? Stanford?

It’s one of the top UCs, so yes. I’m very proud to be going there. There are lots of people who would kill to get in.

YES! UCSD is a top school not just in the US but in the world as well.

UCSD is really strong in more than just the sciences, guys.

It’s top 10 in poli sci, top 10 or so in econ, and top 20 in history. UCSD isn’t a one trick pony.

The only thing I dislike about UCSD is the fact that people I talk to keep confusing it with SDSU.

interesting question…I think you should be proud for sure.

but it does seem like a lot of the people i know going there are just enrolling cuz its the best UC they got into (meaning they were rejected from LA, B).

i have to admit i had the same questions as the OP. i got rejected from LA and Cal out of state and they were my dream schools but now im realizing that i really love san diego and im proud i got in out of state and so what if thats where people who didnt get in to berkeley and la go? i mean there are like a million kids in california each year so a lot of good kids get rejected from those two and also, some kids want to do to SD. i think from an out of state/international also in state level, its a good accomplishment and one of the few public schools worth the out of state tuition. am i right?

I definitely think that it is something to be proud of…I turned down Cal for SD a few years back and questioned my decision during my first couple years at UCSD. I have since come to realize that it was the best decision I ever made.

Of course you should be proud.

It took many years of hard work and high performance to get here. Most people on the planet couldn’t get in here.

Isn’t that the case with all universities, though? Excepting the top 6 or so schools, nearly everyone just goes to the top-ranked school they’re admitted to…

not always – check out the “UCSD over where” thread. it’s getting long!

I didn’t say always, though. I said “nearly everyone.”

I’ve been on this site a long time. I entered college almost a decade ago. Even then, most people just went down a list.

lol kkk thanks everybody for your posts! Go tritons wooT ^_^

You will feel proud for 2 years until you meet the transfer students.

Transfer students have a much easier time getting into UCSD than freshman applicants. In addition, transfer students don’t have to go through the lower division courses with crappy curves. Furthermore, they get the same UCSD bachelor degrees that freshman admits do. And who can forget the best part of being a transfer student-- when they apply to grad schools, which looks at cumulative GPA, transfer students will have an advantage with their inflated CC GPA’s. Unfair? Maybe, but it’s pretty much the same at every UC.

^^ oh come on now, don’t ruin the fun. At least we get 4 years of UCSD and they get 2. Yeah, I love UCSD so… :D

tastybeef,

I was a transfer student. Thanks, buddy. It’s nice to know that you lump everyone into one negative category.
