Is Berkeley worth it?

As I’m sure you all know, the UC system has been very low on money, and berkeley has taken a major hit. few staff have been hired, more have been laid off, and fees continue to rise… and quality of education has undoubtedly suffered as well. What I’m asking is if it’s still worth it to attend berkeley.

It depends on what your alternative plan is, as well as factors like net cost after non-loan financial aid, what you will be studying, etc…

E.g. if your alternative is Harvard, the decision would differ based on student-specific factors. A California non-resident student going into a major where Harvard is as good as or better than Berkeley and comes from a family with income < $60,000 (= full need-based scholarship at Harvard) may come to a different conclusion compared to a California resident student majoring in something not available at Harvard and who would have to pay the full cost.

haven’t personally experienced this. not saying it has gotten better, just saying it’s been about the same for me. the lower divs + weeders have always been filled to the brim with studends, so not like hiring a couple more teachers would really change that. 700 or 200 students, it’s all the same to me – either way I’m still gna kick butt and take names (or get my own butt kicked).

as for your “is it worth it” question, here’s some stats to look at (don’t know how reliable, but i like this website for a lot of things so take it with a grain of salt but should be ballpark): http://www.payscale.com/education/average-cost-for-college-ROI

Yes, Berkeley is still worth it in general. It still has tons of funding, and over 1/3rd of it comes from the private sector. Such a powerful flagship university that has contributed so much in terms of research wouldn’t ever take a huge hit.

Your concerns about going to Berkeley should not be whether or not the school is low on money. It should be on more relevant/prevalent issues such as location, class sizes, the fact that Berkeley is amazing for grad school but generally worse than the ivy leagues for undergrad, ect.
