Is BFS a good reason to transfer? How selective is it?

Accepted to CAS/SAS as a sophomore transfer, intended humanities major. My current university has similar departments to Penn’s sans the BFS/Benjamin Franklin Scholar opportunity. So BFS is definitely something I’d look into were I to matriculate to Penn. My question is though, is BFS for the College extremely selective? Would my chances of getting in be even worse given that I’m a transfer? (I read somewhere that BFS students are typically chosen as incoming freshman and the end of sophomore year is the last year to apply.)

BFS is one of the major things which distinguishes Penn from my current school (because of the seminars, opportunity for senior thesis, etc.) so I’d appreciate if anyone could give me advice/insight on this!

BFS is a great concept, but it is basically a made-up thing that is used to help with Penn’s yield. The reality is that it is just a few extra classes and does nothing to create a community of scholars within the greater campus. Find other good reasons to transfer to Penn; there are plenty.

BFS is what you make out of it. The opportunity to write a senior thesis is a great one that most students don’t get to do. If that’s what you are into doing, then BFS is a perfectly valid reason for transferring.

It’s entirely possible to do BFS without caring, but such is the nature of most things in life.

That’s not necessarily true. Penn has had the BFS program for at least 40 or so years, and has recently enhanced it with the Integrated Studies and residential program components. Take a look at this thread and the items linked therein:

I agree, however, that there are plenty of other good reasons to transfer to Penn. :)
