I know you have to take several classes in all business subjects while taking them in a major making it like a double major but is it really worth the extra classes to have this ‘honor’. Seems like a waste of time to be studying all the subjects when in the end you’ll only one will really matter.

Any thoughts?

Yes. BHP usually get first dibs at recruiting.

I believe BHP students only have to take a few extra classes (Operations Management, Advanced Statistics, and one or two more). Someone correct me if I am mistaken. The rest of the BHP core classes you would have to take as a regular business major anyways, the difference in BHP being, you get/have to take the honors sections. But the classes are not necessarily “harder” because they are honors.

So if you are accepted, it’s worth it.

They tend to be at worse times though, the honors sections. Some classes are offered at 1 or 2 times, and if they don’t fit your schedule, you’ll have to wake up really early and take the 9:30 section, for example.

BrandonD, it really depends on your objectives. I am in BHP and I defintiely think that it is worth it. As mentioned, BHP is a broad core in honors business classes, about 2/3 of which have non-honors equivalents that BBA students also take.

Here are the differentiating factors that, for me make the BHP program worth it:

Strategic, case-based education. This is the main selling point - the professors engage students in class discussions, projects, etc. to get a more strategic mindset ingrained in the students - this is why many BHP students get into top bschools, law schools, etc.

Professors and class sizes - there are about 90 in the freshman class and 125 in the others - for each course in the program, there are usually 3 sections (sometimes 2 as you advance) and the professors are so willing to help out in and outside of class and office hours. The class sizes also make it easy to interact and learn.

Great, competitive and nice friends - I have made a lot of great friends at BHP and wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Also, I know that these people are going to be important in the world some day because they are so motivated, so knowing them may be good in the future too.

Alumni/Recruiting network - Some recruiters like Booz Allen only recruit BHP students, and other simply tend to prefer them. Also, beyond that, I know so many students that have gotten internships through their alumni network, which Shelly, the Assistant Director has access to. Through her, you can contact pretty much anyone for a question and get a response. I have personally contacted many BHP alums and have always gotten an email back.

Program Benefits - being in HBA, officer positions tending to go to underclassmen (next year’s president is a rising junior as is the VP), having leadership and job opportunities as a peer advisor, recruiter, steering commmittee member, make a mark chair, BHP Leadership Kickoff chair, judicial board chair, etc. You get to be involved in these opportunities if you want AND can DEFINITELY take advantage of them. I also didn’t mention that you get 2 advisors to about 200 underclassmen vs. mccombs which is a smaller ratio.

To sum up, it is surely worth it.
