Brown has always been my dream school for a number of reasons. However, I’m planning to major in political science and I can’t find much information about the quality of the department online. In any rankings I’ve seen, Brown is ranked far lower for political science than other schools I’m considering applying to. Since I’m planning to ED to Brown, I wanted to get some input so I don’t end up at a school without a strong political science department.
Yes it is a terrific department. The rankings are really about PhD programs and not undergraduate education.
The study of political science, particularly the aspect of it that relates to public policy decisions, relies on economic principles for part of its foundation. In this area, Brown’s faculty are especially accomplished: https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.usecondept.html. In your greater search, you also may want to consider liberal arts colleges that would be excellent for your interests, such as Claremont McKenna, Hamilton, Amherst and Bowdoin: https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.uslacecon.html.
For Poli Sci, it has the added benefit of being in a state Capitol and of having a second and bigger state Capitol, Boston, just down the road, and you’ll be surrounded by small towns holding New England town meetings… And once every 4 years you can get up to New Hampshire in a couple of hours to see democracy in action during the presidential primaries.
