I’m majoring in business at PSU, and I know they have a required GPA. However< I’m a little worried that I won’t be able to keep it. Will it be extremely difficult to keep a 3.3-3.5GPA?

i have the same question…does anyone know?

There is no easy answer to this. There are some quantitative courses (finance, economics, accounting) that are stumbling blocks for some but a breeze for others. There are more practical/theoretical courses (marketing, management) that pose similar problems.

I excelled in marketing/management courses but had to work my tail off in the quantitative courses. But that’s me. I had friends who excelled where I struggled.

Bottom line - no one can really answer this question for you.

In terms of PSU specifically, I wouldn’t know, sorry!

In general though, for any competitive major with a GPA requirement: it depends on how much effort and time you’re willing to put into studying and keeping up that GPA. If you go to class every day, take good notes, go to OH when necessary, and don’t procrastinate on papers and exams, then there shouldn’t be a problem with keeping a good GPA (and leading a healthy social life).

The most important thing is to be realistic about your shortcomings. If you’re not good a public speaking and you have a huge presentation the next morning, skip out on the frat party tonight and put extra practice in so that you’re ready to blow everyone out of the water. If your memory isn’t that great, spend extra time going over notes and asking questions so that you’ve got it down for the exams. Sometimes all-nighters are necessary, and sometimes you’re going to have to make some social sacrifices to keep your GPA. Depending on your person, putting in extra work may or may not be extremely difficult for you.

Keep in mind though; the Business major (at least, at my university) curves its classes, so you’re not only trying to do the best that you can, but you’re also competing with everyone else. Therefore, in certain classes you can have a 94% in the class yet receive a B- grade (2.7 GPA) after the curve (yes, they do curve against you).

On the other hand, this is only for the intro/lower div/“weeder” classes; once you reach the upper divs you’ll be fine, provided you’re genuinely interested in the subject matter! If you’re not, then you might want to think about doing a different major…

Hope this helps!
