Is Cal Grant different from Fafsa and CSS profile?

We submitted the FAFSA last week and I received an email today that says…

The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) has reviewed information from your FAFSA or California Dream Act Application and GPA and determined that you will not be awarded a Cal Grant Entitlement award.

Does this mean my son will not be able to received any type of aid?

No. It just means that your son did not meet the criteria to be awarded a Cal Grant. He would still be able to receive other types of aid.

If you think he was denied Cal Grant eligibility by mistake, check your FAFSA for any errors and correct them as necessary. See the CSAC website for more information:

^^agree

There are different types of aid you can get

  1. Federal (Pell, student loan, work/study)
  2. State (Calgrant)
  3. University need based or merit
  4. Outside scholarships

You want to get all that you are qualified for of course. So review the eligibility link that LVKris gave you to see why you don’t meet calgrant eligibility to be sure.

FAFSA doesn’t give aid, it just is a form for providing numbers to the college. Same with CSS.

Please note: there is a Financial Aid forum that is useful for these types of questions.

Jenner, you posted last April USC v Davis–are you not already enrolled in one?
