Is Carnegie College of Engineering intense engineering school?

i know Carnegie has one of the best engineering program

but i’m wondering if it’s really intense

cuz altho my passion lies on mathematics and would really love to major in BME

i also luv art/drawing/painting and stuff

will sending my portfolio help my admission?

i’m goin to call adm office to know exactly wat to do
to send it

but i’m wondering if it’ll help any and if CIT is intense engineering school
where i might have hard time to enjoy art

Lets say, you will be amongst your peer group.

‘Intense’ is so relative.

DS roommate, besides being a master violinist, is also a fair painter. (also a ME).

Carnegie is known for working constantly, just be ready.

If you’re applying CIT, your portfolio won’t matter too much…

As a current CMU student, you’re going to get your ass kicked in engineering, or any department. Don’t bother with the art portfolio, CIT won’t care, and the art school is top notch, very small, and extremely selective, so if you just ‘luv’ art, it’s not going to cut it. You might be able to get into some art classes on the side though.

Also, CMU tends to like people who can spell, so keep that in mind. ;)

To add to what Demon said, CMU evaluates on a school-committee system. In essence, Admissions will score some parts of your application I think, but most of the selection is done by individual school committees.

This means your application will be reviewed by CIT people who don’t care if you can draw anything other than schematics.

well… ok thanks for the advice

btw i just dont ‘luv’ art
my dream job was an artist when i was a kid
now im little bit more realistic and like math would like to be a doctor in some way

anyway i’ve been spending so much time on art for so many yrs
even during school yrs i’ve painted and drew for more than simple 10 hours a week
sometimes an entire day esp during the summer

so carnegie disregarding my portfolio is kinda disappointing…ahhh well

thank you guys!

oh and i’m planning to take one or two art classes in college if possible
cuz i’m going to draw till i die

when our son attended, CMU had a strong emphasis on art and technical skills. “DaVinci Effect” . I don’t know if they will disregard your portfolio, but is there harm, if allowed, to adding a photo (hard copy but probaby reduced size) and appropriate links with your application. ?

They still emphasize the DaVinci Effect, but CIT simply isn’t going to evaluate artwork as part of their application process. An applicant could easily write an essay about or put down on their resume the work they’ve done in the artistic fields, and if you have a general online portfolio that includes your artwork CMU does ask for a personal website on the application.

I personally designed a CV that I included with the application and ad the URL prominent by my contact information, and CMU will go look at your website.

However, there is no procedure for - and absolutely no need to - include an artistic portfolio with an engineering application. The portfolio guidelines, including interviews and reviews, are designed and intended for CFA applicants.
