Is choice of a major considered for the Banneker/Key scholarship?

I wrote economics as my major in my UMD app, but now, as a girl, I’m wondering if I should have written computer science. I did mention in the short answer questions that computer science and mathematics are my other top academic interests.

Will this affect my chances for a merit scholarship? I am an out-of-state student from Michigan.

Short answer, no.

For incoming freshman, merit scholarships are determined primarily by stats with heavy weight on standardized test scores.

Of course, there are additional scholarships available within certain majors based on gender, but they are not based strictly on merit if that is what you are looking for - you must demonstrate financial need along with earning the merit, and you typically are only eligible to apply after you matriculate (so most are not for freshman).

Thanks, maryversity. That makes sense!
