Is cloud computing a good choice?

Hello.
I am going to go to university next year and I came across the major called Cloud computing. I’ve always been interested in something in the IT department. And since CC is an upcoming major It really got my interest. I talked to a few people about it. Some people said that it’s really good with a lot of future while the most critical opinion (my dad’s) said that CC doesn’t need a BA degree and I could just study it after studying dentistry (Like my parents dream…) so if anyone knows/is studying/working in that department. Is it actually good with a lot of future? thanks

I don’t see why you would need to go to college for 4 years to learn about cloud computing. It is no different than on prem computing except it is not at your own data center. Each cloud provider has its own database, analytics engine, security and other tools. You may learn ways of using multi-cloud to enable backup and disaster discovery, but everything is still so new, I don’t think anyone could teach it well without practical experience. We still say, “In theory it should work, but no one has done it yet.” I don’t see anyone getting out of industry and going to academic to teach yet.
You would be better off in getting solid general CS education, and learn some of those technics on the job.

When you’re starting out, you want to study something fairly broad, and let your career direction determine what specialty you go in. If you make it too specific, you limit your job prospects, which is something you don’t want when you’re trying to get an entry level job. I would recommend just getting a degree in IT.

You cannot learn cloud computing after doing dentistry. There is nothing common and you wouldn’t have the foundation in software engineering and computer architecture needed to understand and do well in cloud computing. More importantly, it will do nothing for your career in dentistry.

Cloud computing is certain in the now and in the future, but you more or less need a solid background in CS or IT first before delving into CC. Then online resources like Udemy or Coursera can fill in the rest.
