Is Dickinson a safety?

I’m getting safeties and I was wondering is Dickinson is a safety…

GPA: 3.63 UW
School Dosen’t Rank
SAT(old): 1250

In 9th grade I was in all regular classes except for math, and I was in integrated science and my GPA sucked. I worked the summers of my Freshman and Sophomore years to catch up and now I’m full IB after a lot of hard work and sweet talking my consuelor. So, I went from regular cclasses with a low GPA to full IB with a high GPA, but my overall is still somewhat low. I also moved from living with a bi-polar guardian who wasn’t on their medication and I moved out of state after I was abonded. Will these things make me stick out in my essays and such? Should I mention them?

EC’s:
At my old school
BPA: President
Key Club
Multi-Cultural Club

At my new school:
NHS (Vice President)
SNHS
Young Republicans
Young Democrats (Yes, I’m in both, I like both sides of the coin)
Quiz Bowl team

Here’s the list

NYU is my first choice and dream school and I applied EA and included all my unique “baggage” in my essays. Please evaluate my chances and be honest! I know I’m sub-par, but I think I may be extremely in my essays by talking about how it affected me academicaly and socialy and what not. What do you guys think?

Also, I have done a summer internship at a law firm, have over 150 hours community service at a hospital, did the Cornell Summer program and I had to skip two years of Spanish because my old school had 6 periods for the whole year, so class of language a year. Here, it’s 4x4 so you have to have 6 years. I skipped Spanish 3 and 4 and went straight to IB Spanish 1 and got an A and a B+ in IB Spnaish 2. So, in short, I skipped two years of Spanish and did very welland included it in my persoanl statement. I wrtoe the above post a long time ago so it’s in the future tense. My school dosen’t rank and I’m Full IB. Freshman year I was in all regular classes and took courses over the summer to be in IB. Thanks for any feedback at all!

if you applied ED to nyu wouldnt you have heard by now? what was the result?
based on your stats, it seems like dickinson would be more of a match than a safety.

I’d say Dickinson Regular Decision is more of a match for you than a safety. If you’re male, or will add geographic diversity, it may be a safer match, but still a match not a safe bet as your GPA and test scores are right on their medians. An example of what I would consider a safety for someone with your stats would be schools like Clark University in Mass, Goucher in Maryland, perhaps Ursinis College in PA.

The other issue, of course, is that Dickinson is a very different school than your “dream school” of NYU. I always recommend trying to find at least one safe bet and several match schools that are as similar as possible to your “dream” reach school. Since I don’t know what attracts you to NYU, I can’t really make strong recommendations, but if you are attracted to NYU because it is in an urban environment, I’d suggest you focus on finding safe bet schools with similar locations — some possibilities: Wagner College, American U, Temple, Drexel. But again, I’m just shooting in the dark without more information about why NYU is your dream school.

They don’t even require SATs I just found out. Why wouldn’t they require them? If I had applies ED, what would my chances have been then?

Dickinson is one of the several hundred schools that have made submitting SATs optional in the admissions process (you can find more at www.fairtest.org). That wouldn’t make it a safety for you, however, it would still be a match as your GPA is right on their median. (Most applicants still submit their SAT scores to Dickinson) As I said, Dickinson might be a safer match if you are male, add geographic diversity (outside the northeast), or are an under-represented minority.

Dickinson fills 62% of its class through its Early Decision and non-binding Early Action admissions options, which means by the RD round only 38% of acceptance spots are left. The ED acceptance rate last year was 69%, the Early Action rate was 52%, the Regular Decision acceptance rate was 45%.
If you’d applied ED, with a 69% acceptance rate, I’d have termed it a safe bet for you. Early Action, it would have been a safer match. But with a 45% RD acceptance rate and stats right on their median, I’d consider it a solid match not a safety. That doesn’t mean you wouldn’t get in - and if it interests you, you should definitely apply - but don’t fool yourself into thinking its a sure thing in the RD round.

By the way, I think you have a decent shot at NYU. Yes, it’s a bit of a reach, but a realistic reach. Good luck!

Carolyn, where are you getting those numbers from? Thanks ofr the help!
