is doing UROP good for Premed

Is UROP a good way to get started when it comes to extracurriculars for Premeds?

Would it be doable while taking Orgo?

UROP was a great experience for me although I am engineer and not premed. I developed a great relationship with my sponsoring professor and was able to learn a lot from him throughout the year. UROP is a year long commitment and I also had Orgo at the same time. Orgo is a challenging class at Michigan but my UROP workload stayed in the lab. If, like me you are working with a professor whose research primarily deals with organic chemistry, the course will become even more interesting to you!

Not sure if you are planning on doing UROP for credit or work study. I took it for 2 credits and was required to put in 6 hours a week (can also do 3 or 4 credits at 9/12 hours. This was very manageable, especially when I had to set up a reaction that had to sit for 4 hours and I could do other homework or leave to get other things done.

After attending the symposium at the end of the year where everyone presents their work, I was really impressed by the projects my peers were fortunate enough to participate in. If you have any questions about the program or Michigan in general, I’d be glad to help.

I’m a premed student and neuroscience major and I participated in UROP this past year. It was a good experience overall and it will certainly help with medical school admissions. Research is becoming increasingly more important to universities and to the field medicine. Although the seminars might seem tedious, it allows you to improve your network as well as your relationships with professors or PI’s. Definitely worth it.

If I’m gonna do UROP, I think it’s better if I schedule easier classes around Orgo, it should be manageable I think

Are you doing UROP for credits or work study? How many total credits are you planning on taking? Most of the people in my seminar were in orgo, its definitely manageable.

I’m doing UROP for credit. If I get into it, I’ll be taking 3 classes

If I don’t get into UROP, or don’t find a project, then I’ll just simply take 4 classes
