I’ve heard rumors on CC that Stanford generally tends to reject more really qualified applicants and accept more less qualified applicants EA than RD, is this true to some degree?

Stanford uses EA the same way many selective U’s do- to scoop up WOW’s[ walk on water kids], recruited athletes, professors kids, DA’s, qualified legacies, etc etc. They accept a mixture of highly qualified and perhaps not quite so qualified students during both rounds.

If you’re a qcompetitive student but not one of those shoe-ins but have S as your first choice, is it still wise to apply EA?

WHO KNOWS? That is the question that so many would like have answered , and which no one [ outside of admissions] actually has the answer. Stanford doesnt care AT ALL if they are your first choice, so if there are other colleges that do give weight to a show of interest[ via an early application], then you are probably wiser to play your early card elsewhere.

So they don’t really play the yield game in terms of guessing who will come if admitted?

its not a game- its a guesstimate. A couple of years ago there were more acceptances than they had anticipated and it created havoc, both with where to house the additional students, as well as causing a reduction in the number of students that Stanford could accept the following year. If it was easy to figure out how many students would say "yes " it would be a lot easier for all.

I find it interesting to look at the cross-admit yield graph with Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT though I’m not sure to what extent that’s considered.

can you post a link to that graph? there is a current discussion on the parents forum about cross admits/ yields at “elite” colleges. Thanks in advance.

Here’s a website that addresses that: [College Cross-Admit Comparison: Harvard University vs Yale University | Parchment - College admissions predictions.](<a href=“Compare Colleges: Side-by-side college comparisons | Parchment - College admissions predictions.”>Compare Colleges: Side-by-side college comparisons | Parchment - College admissions predictions.)
Not sure how accurate that is though

Oh yeah, I saw that awhile ago.

menloparkmom:
