Young person here and I think all talk of presents is tacky. I find registries meh as well.
I like picking out gifts and I like it when others do as well. Sometimes there is something I want and someone happens to ask and I get to enjoy it. If not, I buy it myself. I don’t think I have ever been disappointed after a birthday because I just don’t have the expectation that I will love my gifts. I like the surprise element and the tradition of giving from the heart. I am not the least materialistic person I know, but to lean on others to make your wishes come true? Meh.
