I have done community service before, but I’ve never fundraised for a charity or volunteered for an organization. Now I’m planning on starting a citywide service program. Although I’ve done much research on the subject, I don’t know if it’s enough. Should I volunteer for a community organization to acquire some experience?

I attend an online school (distance learning) so I don’t have access to NHS and other CS clubs.

As a person who has done a lot of community service, including organizing a statewide service project, I don’t think it’s a good idea to start at the top. It would be far better for you to learn first about service by working with a local service organization. Perhaps after volunteering there for a while, you could implement your idea by using that organization as a base. That’s far easier than starting a service project – even a small one – completely on your own with no previous experience.

In fact, when I started my statewide program, I did it through a company that I was affiliated with. That gave me credibility and easy access to the kind of support that I needed for the program to be a success.
