Is FAFSA (data retrieval) only worried about federal taxes or state too?

So my mom e-filed her taxes and is getting a very small federal refund and owes a little bit to my state. I hope to do the data retrieval soon. I read the data retrieval works much faster when you have a federal refund but since she is mailing a check in for the state, I’m not sure if that’s going to be a holdup? Or perhaps the state payment/refund doesn’t matter to FAFSA?

Thank you sincerely! I’m the first in my family to go to college!

Only the federal return matters for FAFSA.

Thank you helpfuldad!

Can you confirm that refunds do process the tax return faster, thus allowing data retrieval to work sooner?

Check out the DRT sticky thread at the top of this forum for times between tax return submittal and data retrieval.

Thank you, entomom! If you’d like to delete this to remove clutter I’m fine with that.

@edison96, answering your question from the DRT thread here since that thread is for posting DRT availability times. How your mom pays her state tax has absolutely no impact on when the DRT will be available.

We have refund on my Fed Tax return, and the DRT was available in about 1 week after e-filing.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. Sorry I totally missed the DRT sticky.
